Odds of the part failing are slim. If it does fail the fan will go to full rpm so it shouldn't hurt the engine but show up on the mpg.
Not sure what part number you have, there is a tag on the thermovalve.
I had to replace my thermovalve after a radiator replacement. The shop contaminated the system and the valve stuck.
I ordered a new valve from Whitehouse Products in the UK. The part number was 553/1/09857/210 THERMO VALVE, and at the time cost ~$265. It took a week to get.
