Weak woofer
The woofer speaker housed under the kitchen gas burners puts out low volume sound. Any ideas why it is, so weak?

If it's putting out some sound then perhaps there might be a power/ volume knob on the unit, or maybe a menu setting in the receiver. Is it the original receiver? Mine wasn't putting out anything and the receiver was old enough that I couldn't find any internal way to boost the power. I replaced the receiver to have surround sound and be able to play music via a USB. I then needed to add an amp to the subwoofer. Works great now.

Yes, my receiver is the original. I think adding an amp to the subwoofer is probably the ticket. What receiver upgrade did you buy and what amp? Wher does the amp get installed?

If you want to try and use your existing equipment then you should find the manual and see if it sheds any light on the woofer issue. If you want to upgrade as I did, then you need to do a little investigation on the subwoofer. It will either be powered by its own 120V power source with amplifier, or it will be non-powered, having no adjustments, no amp or power cord. That type gets it's power from the reciever. Most newer home theater type receivers use a powered subwoofer. If yours is of the non powered type, it will have to be replaced or an external amp added if your new receiver require that. You should also try and determine how many watts and ohms it's rated for. Depending on the subwoofer, the cost is about the same. Since mine was buried under the sink and was of the non powered type, I chose to add the amp.
I upgraded to a Sony STR-540. It was last years model and I saved some money. It has the USB port I wanted but no Bluetooth. It's a 5.1 system which works nicely with the in ceiling speakers for excellent surround sound when watching movies. The speakers are 4ohm but I've had no problem since I don't crank them up. I also changed out the TV which integrates to the receiver automatically.
The sub woofer Amp I got at partsexpress.com. They have a variety to choose from at all price points. I probably over killed on mine but it sounds great. You can get selection advice from them. The amp is larger and heavier than I expected but I was able to mount it up inside the a TV cabinet since I had extra room once the old TV was gone.

What kind of system do you have? A Bose Lifestyle 3? or some other kind? It it's a Bose there are 2 dials on the subwoofer/amp to control loudness and cutoff.

With our surround system there is 4 different power levels for the woofer that can be set by going into the volume control set-up.

Stan, I suspect that you have the old woofer that is not powered but rather operates like the other speakers at what we refer to as "speaker level" input. Those are very inefficient at producing good bass response. My subwoofer was inside a cabinet under the dining room table. I just updated my surround sound system, replacing the receiver and adding a powered subwoofer. I also added a Blu-Ray DVD player. The sound is amazing!

Hi Stan! Sorry for the late reply but we were out of town yesterday. Here is a list of the products I used:
Denon AVR-E200 receiver (Amazon) $199.95
Samsung BD-FM51 Blu-Ray player (Wal-Mart) $72.76
Polk PSW110 powered subwoofer (Crutchfield) $149.99
Yamaha has a smaller subwoofer, YST-SW102, that has excellent reviews and is a little smaller than the Polk if space is a problem. (Amazon $99.95)
We used the original front and back speakers.
One caution, the Denon receiver does not "upscale" inputs. In order to have HDMI output you must have HDMI input!
Let me know if you need more info!
Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!
