Wet wood

My driver side pass through bay door was damaged by the previous owner. I noticed water dripping from above the central vac unit this weekend after a rain. There had been some mysterious moisture in the bay floor but not much so I pushed it to the bottom of the todo list. I investigated closer and see that the bay door is pulling the trim strip away from the outside wall sometimes. I filled the gap with sealer and after a trip to Blue Beacon a lot of water was dripping. I cut the material on the bay ceiling and the wood under there is wet and rotten. What purpose does this wood serve? The floor under the refrigerator right above it is dry and it felt solid when I replaced the fridge a couple of months ago. This has been wet for a lot longer than that. Could the water be coming in behind that trim strip? The only thing above this spot is the refrigerator vent. It is only wet when it rains so I don't think it is an internal water issue.
