What "Hoops" Do You Jump Through!?
I was just thinking about going to the emissions station here in Colorado every year with $85 in my hand and was wondering what others are made to do in your communities. What do you have to do to keep your rig legal? We don't need safety inspections here but I know other states require it. Jeez!!

Well here in Oklahoma we use to have safty inspections but not now. So the only thing you have to do is buy the tag for it or in my case since I have so many vehicles and boats I just get a used dealers license and put a used dealers tag on it. Pay about $15 for a title in my name and skip taxes on everything.

In the northern counties of Washington, we don't have safety or emissions inspections. In the more densely populated counties to the south, they have emissions checks. As far as I know, WA doesn't have safety inspections anywhere.
There has been some talk of dropping the smog checks in a couple of years because they're finding that most of the post-2000, fuel-injected vehcles always pass. There's still a law against "emitting visible smoke" which gets the really worn engines off the street.
They also have had problems with full-time 4wd which can't be switched to 2wd. The roller dynamometers only have one roller. A friend with one of the very early Range Rovers got into a big slanging match with the smog testers when roller dynos first appeared. They insisted he put one set of wheels on the roller and he refused. it ended up with the State Patrol and a lawyer getting in the act. The state eventually backed down when he said they would be liable for several thousand dollars in repair costs because they'd "deliberately destroyed" the transmission.

I reside in both NY and FL. NY has inspections for RV's, but FL does not.
Guess where I chose to register?

Safety inspection yearly on RVs and any gas vehicle with an 8600+ gvw or diesel powered vehicle
Gas vehicle under 8600gvw...safety and emissions test...every 1 or 2 years (we can buy 1 or 2 year inspections)
In Missouri

In Alaska once your diesel is over 5 years old you are required one emission inspection, no safety check. I'm sure thats based on population density. Alaska is twice the size of texas but has a population of less than 700,000.

In Arizona there is no safety inspection, but there is a smog test if you live in Phoenix Metro or Tucson. All they do is plug into the OBDII plug and check for faults, no dyno for cars with OBDII.
Took my MH in for the first time and they made me run it on a dyno , even though it is a '99 and has an OBDII, did some checking and found out it was just because the attendant was too lazy to get in and crawl under the dash. That won't happen again.

Her in Vancouver (right across the Columbia from Portland) we have emission checks. All they do on the DP's is check for opacity in the exhaust. Sensor in exhaust pipe, full throttle in neutral to redline, let off and repeat. Ours, even with the Banks kit, barely registers.

SC droppped vehicle inspections years ago. They had too few inspection stations so it was difficult to get inspected. The fee was too low so the certified stations lost money on everyone they did so they hated doing them.

Colorado has put vans with "sniffers" on the ramp to the freeways. Photo your license plate. Saves me a trip to the test station. Only applies to gassers.
