Workhorse TCM and problem starting engine

I have a 2003 Monaco La Palma on a Workhorse Chassis. The engine is the Vortec 8.1 and Allison 5 speed. The unit had been parked for about 4 months and now will not even turn over. The battery is good and the starter will work manually. The 20 amp fuse for the TCM was blown under the hood and attempts to replace just blew the new fuse immediately. When the TCM module was unplugged the short disappeared. Conclusion by the mechanic was a bad module which he claimed was $700 used.

I talked further with an RV Tech who added that even after replacing the module the unit will not run under power without reprogramming which would require towing to a dealer capable to reprogramming, also very costly. I have arranged to have this RV Tech make a service call for a second opinion and better solution. He is busy for the next week.

Af ainyone who can relate to this issue I would appreciate your feedback.

To help get you started.

I certainly would not want to guess at the problem especially at those prices you mention .... to be quite frank, your tech has not proved this out IMO ....not that he's wrong....I'm just saying that I would dig a little deeper to check this out and would like a wiring schematic of the TCM unplugged it and with a jumper with a 10qmp fuse hook to the power terminal and the ground circuit. I would want to prove out that the TCM was indeed shorted internally. ( and if so it's most likely a diode)

An important side note. Some of the best advice I ever received here at iRV2 was using the " iRV2 GOOGLE" search function located at the top right of your iRV2 screen.

ps' I see a reman TCM for $550.00 and the rebuilder can bring you up to any programming if necessary.

Happy Hunting
