Assateague Island Great Camping

I'm not sure how we missed out on Assateague Island till now. Great camping less than 100yds from a beautiful dog friendly beach and only 3 hours from home. Though Ocean City is up the road 10 miles out on this island it feels very wilderness, especially for the east coast.

In addition to that the wild horses wander right in to the campground and today one family decided site 25 next to the new Excel was a great place to stay a while. The foal had a little lunch and went down for a nap while mom and dad did their siesta standing. This is why we RV, not gonna happen at a hotel!

Brad, what is the name of the campground. We too are about 3~3.5 hours from there, but didn't know about the camping.

We are at Assateague State Park Loop H and we'll be coming back. They have 350 sites here with a number of pet friendly loops but only H has electric so you have to book pretty far out. They recently postponed some dune relocation (which will change the campground map) till 2016 so reservations for next year were held off. After scouting the good sites we jumped on a spot for next October when that window opened on 10/20. The 7/31-8/31/15 period opens up tomorrow, 6/26-7/30 opens on 11/3 and 4/22-6/25/15 on 11/10. We've been told spring and fall are the best time to be here, summer is crowded and the misquitos and green flies are fierce in the warmer months. The NPS also has some non-hookup campgrounds further down the island.

We've had some fine weather this week, a couple cooler rainy days mid week but not a cloud in the sky and temps close to 70 this weekend. Outstanding wide open beach which is very similar to the Outer Banks in NC but a lot closer for us. Berlin, the closest town, is very nice and recently voted coolest small town in America by Budget Travel (Berlin named 'America's Coolest Small Town' | Eastern Shore News - WBAL Home) The US 50 strip outside Ocean City offers plenty of shopping with the entire gamut of Wal Mart, Home Depot etc about 8 miles away. The campground closes for the year tomorrow 10/27.

Thanks for all the info. Especially about the green flies.
