Axle spacing

In an attempt to reduce road shock on the trailer body (4 broken lag screws, some more than once) I installed Dexter E-Z Flex equalizers. The equalizers I used were for up to 6000 lb. axles and axle spacing of 33 inches. With a combined axle load of 11,580 lb. after two years one of the equalizers developed a tear in the rubber so I'm replacing it. If the axle spacing was 35 inches I could have used an E-Z Flex equalizer rated for up to 8000 lb. axles.
If the axle spacing were 35 inches would the tires run cooler? Could larger diameter tires be mounted which would run cooler? Any comments on this?
I have a 2005 L33RKO.

ride,

Broken lag screws are not an uncommon problem. I've also had the problem and replaced the broken screw with a 3/8" Grade 8 bolt while also installing a shim to fill the void in the trim. See this link: http://www.irv2.com/forums/f116/brok...ler-53100.html

I think my next repair will be a through bolt also. I don't know about the use of high tensile strength bolts since the screws didn't fail in tension. I have been using stainless steel lag screws since they are easily available and tough (ever try to cut or hack saw through stainless steel?). I have been using a block of hardwood as a filler inside of the aluminum extrusion. I have noticed that other screws adjacent to the lag screws are sheared off when the lag screws fail. You have to get underneath and look up to find them.
I think the screws(or bolts) will continue to break unless I can mitigate the road shock transmitted to the frame from bumps and pot holes. The E-Z Flex equalizers might help but haven't prevented screw breakage.
The reference to cooler running tires might be in vain since I haven't been able to find suitable larger diameter tires if I actually had larger axle spacing (35" vs 33").
Down the road I might consider Mor-ryde IS as a solution I guess.
