Our 2005 35MKO came with the manual awning. Has anyone upgraded to an electric awning? I believe the factory wiring is already in-place and it should be a fairly straight-forward process.

John,

I don't know about the wiring, we ordered ours with it. I can tell you that it works great and it is worth the cost for the convenience. I keep the remote in my truck and if I come home and it is raining I can put it out and stay dry while opening the door. If you leave it out and the wind gets over a preset threshold it will close itself. The sensor for that is on the roof so I doubt the wiring is included for that, but it could be.

But what if a big gust of wind comes through? I can see where it would not have time to close resulting in damage.

Thanks Bob, maybe the PI folks will chime in--we need to get Jack and Ed to visit as if they ever have time! . Smith Center Customer Service Center is one BUSY place.

Well if it was enough to hurt this one it would surely take out a manual one too. The electric awning will also dump water if it catches any. All things considered, I think the electric awning is more durable than the manual. I try to make this camping thing as easy on us as I can. I guess this is part of ageing.

True, but if it's windy, we don't leave the awning out. I can see where, with an electric one, one might be tempted to leave it out on the assumption that it would close if the wind got up to a particular speed. Probably a good assumption if the wind picks up speed slowly, but...

At the Family reunion there was one on the east side of high school the did not survive the Kansas wind. I don't know if he had the wind sensor turned off or not but it got bent all out of shape. Not pretty.

So the best practice is to put it away when leaving the camper.

Good morning.

All Limited Edition fifth wheels, 2004 and newer are wired for the A & E Weatherpro electric awning. You will find the wire for the wind sensor by pulling the fluorescent light down that is in the bedroom. (2007 models have 2 fluorescent lights in the bedroom. It will be the front light)The wire is a phone wire so after you pull the light down, simply drill a 3/16" hole up through the fiberglass roof and run your wire out. One end of the 12V wire is located at the top-front corner of the basement access door on the curb side. The other end can be found by drilling a 1" hole through the fiberglass, approximately 6" up from the trim that holds the lower cap. (Directly under where the (front) leg is located if you currently have the A&E Two-Step awning). If you have questions, you can call Jack or Ed at Excel. 800-368-3759.
