Fishing Rod Storage
This is my second post for the day, and the last, maybe. This is one of those simple and borderline stupid questions but I am a bit stumped.
We are getting ready to leave on our 6 week swing thru Minnesota, ND, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado and I want to take some fishing poles. The problem I am having is trying to figure out how to store the things without risk of breaking them. The last time I took some poles we had the motorhome and I stored them under the bed. When we got home 2 of them had the tips broken.
Two of the rods are fairly expensive 6 1/2 footers which are one piece so under the bed routine is out. What I am thinking about doing is getting a Velcro rod hold down strap set that is used in boats and mounting it to the ceiling in the storage bay. That would let the rods hang there and hopefully not be broke. The problem is I would have to make a trip to Bass Pro Shops in Broken Arrow to get the straps. Darn the luck. Not sure that would stand the abuse of the trip though. I really don't want any rod storage tubes as they would just take up more room in my storage bay.
I tried putting them in one of our closets but none are tall enough. Any suggestions besides new, shorter rods? I already carry 10 in my bass boat and the wife says that is enough.

I went with the rod storage tube but have too much storage space and capacity by design.
I had thought as you are about other options but I have taken care of my rods and reels and most are 30 years old and still in great shape. I even have a Ted Williams spinning rod from 1976 - well used and good as day 1. I just decided since I had room I'd go the tube route. I think I'd make room anyway. There are 5 in the tube and room for more. The problem I saw with mounting unprotected rods was bumping and breaking when getting / putting other things in the bay.
Reels removed don't take up too much space. I have been laughed at here for spending a buck twenty on the case instead of making a tube out of PVC. To each their own.
Good fishin' and hope ya don't hear "ya shoulda been here yesterday".

Jim, for something cheap, go to your local hardware store and get some thin wall PVC pipe, a couple of caps for the ends. Cabela's used to ship their rods like this back in the 80's and I kept the tubes and haul mine like that. I can carry two rods in a 2" pipe. If you go bigger, 4", will allow you to carry more in one pipe. They can be carry in your basement with ease and you don't have to warry about any breakage.

Jim,
What still said....except I would go with 4" coextrusion pipe (HD, Lowes plumbing)as it is super cheap and light. It's what I use for my sewer hose sleeve in my E-Z pivot. Also use it for sewer hose protector on sewer hose extension outside of the E-Z pivot. Just my .02 worth. rockin'

I installed 6in tube across back end of 5th wheel under the frame ahead of spare tire on my excel. Could be smaller dia if want. Attached with bracket to frame. One end cap glued the other slid on with with hole drilled in top edge of cap and through wall of tube and put nail through drilled hole to hold cap from sloping off.

Jim,
Depending on how you pack your outside slide compartments, you may be able to install individual fishing rod holders on the back of the slide compartment. That's what we did, and we carry four 6 and 6.5 ft rods without any problems. I got the rod holders from Walmart several years ago.

After studying the suggestions I went to Bass Pro Shops yesterday since we had to go to Tulsa anyway. I bought 2 of their $7.99 Velcro rod straps which are about 2 inches wide and has a 12" and 6" strip. They also have 4 screw holes for attaching the straps to the deck of a boat. I put one of the longer strips on the ceiling above the storage bay to go over the handles and one in front of the reels and the two short ones about mid way and at the tips of the rods. Appears to be very secure and out of the way. We'll see.
