Was in a campground a few years back where a guy had just purchased a used 5-er,, We pulled the broken spring assembly and took it to a nearby spring shop, went back a day later and picked it up and replaced it, Tons of fun. Those nuts do not come off easily but.. Guess who has a tool that turns them into butter .

My dealer told me that PI has been reccomending 4k springs as replacement when the 3500 lb springs fail. Doing so doesn't increase your weight carrying capacity because it still has 7k axles. Or, is the axle rating purely based on what springs they install? I guess I will be calling Dexter again.

I'm betting it is a smoke wrench.

I called Ralph when my springs failed. He said nothing about replacing my 3500 lb springs with 4K springs.

Try it on the truck.

I bought a Dewalt 18 volt impact last year (300 ft lbs of torque) and I'm surprised what it will do. The bad thing is two batteries won't get the job done on one wheel unless you loosen them first. It did loosen them from the 125 lbs that I torque the lug nuts at on the WC

I agree, higher load rated spring will be a stiffer ride. If you carry a lot of weight around with you (ie more stuff...), then the higher load springs may be a good idea. It may also ride slightly higher due to less settling under the static load, the spring will deflect less and be more curved.

I have had the Dewalt 18v for years..... different league completely, the Proto with 1250 lb/ft rating will loosen the truck wheel nuts torqued to 450 lb/ft.

Chief......well, I'm sure most can see this but let me restructure for the benefit of those that may not get it.

If you are travelling and your springs break on your Peterson Industries Excel fifth wheel a good air impact wrench or this cordless can help remove the spring bolts. This may be much easier with this tool to repair any part of your RV or truck that require the removal of nuts and bolts.

Glad no one was hurt or property destroyed because of your spring breaking.

Thanks Chevy, not planning on adding weight. I'm just think the stock springs are under engineered for that unecpected bounce on some of these roads. Spring failure is way to common on rv trailers of all makes. My question is...if I add 500 lbs of capacity with a 4000 lb spring instead of a 3500 lb spring and keep gvw the same won't I be adding some spring strength? I understand I may get a bit stiffer ride but not so much if the stock springs are under engineered to begin with and bouncing and flexing to much anyway. I have heavy duty shackles and reinforcee spring hangers. To all my engineer and one rocket scientist friend out there... Where am I going wrong? I only have 3 months to figure this out! Lol
