Mice?

Was reading in another forum/thread about the prevalence of mice in the Grand Tetons while work camping in the area. My question is the the tightness of the Excel Winslow and what steps have any of you taken to keep out the mice?

Poison is not permitted in the Tetons on Yellowstone.

We have had excellent results using some of the little plug-in sonic repellers. Hadn't had a mouse in three years. Signs of one a month ago. Discovered the repeller in that area had gotten unplugged. Plugged it back in and the guest packed up and moved out that night.

If mice want in they will find a place. They can squeeze through small gaps.

Fortunately, I've never had a rodent issue in my 16 years of RV'ing.

Tomorrow I'll find a rat nest in my Excel....

Its been my experience if a mouse can get their little head thru a opening, they can get their body thru too. I remember reading something about their skeleton is very flexible.

We've had 2 mice in almost 11 years of FT. Not bad. Both got into the oven and ate some stuff (bread and crackers - we use the oven for storage when moving). Apparently they didn't care for it as they left!!! Ha. rockin'

Thanks for the tip on the sonic units JR. Geez Doc, hope I didn't jinx you on the mouse post and Rockin, the oven must have a small vent hole that allowed the mice in. Thanks for the replies.

I've tried keeping them out but I believe that they will get in if they are there and want in. I use a live trap, peanut butter, gloves and a body slam. I've used spring traps only to have them dragged off. Never to be found.

Current scientific evidence suggests that ultrasonic devices for repelling rodents are not effective. For years, I thought dryer sheets and moth balls were a good combination until I found rodent nests made with the dryer sheets. I'm convinced that if you have a rodent problem, you've got to find out where they are getting in and seal the opening. Otherwise, if you're concerned when at the Tetons, use good ole' conventional mice traps (unless you travel with pets or small children). If you have pets or small children, use the traps that trap the mouse in an enclosed trap.

I have caught up to 4 mice a day in Cottonwood CP, above Buena Vista, CO. I'm thinking this should be the official rv mice testing site.
I didn't catch more than 2 a day in Gros Ventres in the Grand Tetons.

Actually, heli, on the later model Atwood ovens, the vent is a channel from the top of the oven to the top of the stove in the rear. No external vent to the outside like in the olden days. That's one of the reason they use a vent fan over the stove which still doesn't vent to the outside! rockin'

Also, I use old pill bottles (about 6 of them) with holes drilled in them. Fill with moth balls and lay around the basement and genset box area. Not seen any mice in those areas.

It's been disappointing that the last two RVs we've owned didn't have outside vents. What they have in common is both vent through the microwave.

Whats really fun is a pack rat getting under the hood of the PU. They see to love the insulation. Haven't seen any signs of mice. Maybe that cat being trapped in here for two days took care of that. :-) We stuffed brillo pad stuff around all the pipes. We had major room around the washer drain into the basement. We don't have washer. And there was major room also around the kitchen sink drain. We also have Osage Hedge Balls (those round rough green balls) in the basement. Supposingly (yes thats a word)it keeps creepy crawlers out too. Nothing edible is kept in basement. I know some people keep extra potatoes/onions etc there.

Everything I have read says the electronic repellants do not work........BUT........ I have never had a mouse when using one. We are renting a cabin in MT this winter, and stopped counting after trapping 8 mice in the truck. After putting the repeller under it - not a single one.
