Camperguy,
We use treated 2 x 6 lumber along the bottom of slide-outs. When we were using the plastic U-trim on the bottom of the slide room side wall, it would hold water if the silicon sealant failed, thus causing the wood to rot from h2o absorption. When we discontinued the plastic U-trim, (Like Tom, I can't recall exactly when that was)we also decided that would be a good place to use treated lumber.... especially because of the fender well areas usually being under a slide-out.
You asked Tom but I would comment that YES, the slide-outs are the highest mainentance item on any RV. But then, they have the most moving parts. Each time we push the button, we are asking the mechinism to do alot. That is one of the reasons we converted to the "new generation" hydraulics.
Since we introduced hydraulics, our warranty in that area has decreased by approx 70%!!
As for walking on the slide floors when they are in, you aren't going to hurt them. They do give but we've been building them for over 20 years and I can't recall a single issue of damage being caused by walking on them.
