Tire Replacement

Hello Newmar Family

I'm new to the RV world. I purchased a 2014 Newmar Ventana LE about a year ago and was grateful to put 10,000 miles on it with my wife and 6 year old son. I thought it was a great first year on the road for us!

That being said, it has the original tires on it which are GY670 RV tires. They have about 25K miles on them now. It is my understanding around the 6-7 year mark it when you need to change them. I have about 10/32 tire left right now.

Can I get some opinions on life of RV tires along with good replacements that give you the best bang for your buck+longevity? Thanks in advance!

There are many threads concerning new tires. Go to the top of the page and hit the yellow search tab and tires. You will find a lot of discussion on this subject.

Hi nmventana14,
If you were the original owner and were meticulous about PSI, covering when parked in the sun, clean and treated with dressing I would recommend keeping the tires 10 years. I replace tires after 10 years. However, this is not the case. Consider going 7 years. If budget is a concern consider replacing the steer tires after 7 years and the drive axle tires the following year. The brand of tire is your choice. I buy only Michelin through the FMCA tire program.

I put Toyos on my rig a couple of weeks ago. Just back from a 1800 mile round trip.
The Toyos handled as well as the Michelins that came off, I couldn't tell any difference.

(Before the COVID travel haters jump on me, it was a trip to my mother in law's empty house way the heck out in nowhere Tn. where the nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile away, to do some non-delayable repairs on the house. Other than fuel stops I didn't get out of the RV, didn't stay in MIL's house, didn't see anyone while I was there.).

Just replaced my Michelins with Toyo's today. Replaced my tires earlier than I wanted after a blowout while parked and sidewall cracking on all the others after only 18,00 miles.

Have heard of several horror stories concerning Goodyear
(GY670, I believe is a GY #) tires on RVs. Also had personal experience with Goodyear versus Michelin’s when working for a truck shop for nearly 20years.
You are already at the 6 year mark. Even though they may not be showing any cracks, you didn’t mention any, do yourself a favor and replace them. At a minimum, replace the front steering tires. I prefer Michelin’s, but that’s a choice you must make. I can guarantee you will have an improved ride and handling with the Michelin’s over the GY. You don’t want to experience a blowout on the front of one of these vehicles.
FYI, Andy

For sure Andy and thank you! This is definitely where I am at. It looks like Michelin is a great tire. I appreciate the input!

Tire replacement

You can't always tell the age of your tires by the model year of the coach. Check the DOT build date stamped on the side of each tire.

And when you buy new tires try to get them no older than 6 months and make sure they are all the same age.

Have them inspected by a commercial Goodyear tire professional. Goodyear states if properly maintained they can go 10 but you need to have them checked.

We have owned Newmar diesel's for 23 years which we have traveled over 280K miles. Have had 2 tire blow outs and will share our suggestion on tire replacement. Our first London Aire (97) had Goodyear tires which a had a rear tire outside blow out with both damage inside wheel well and outside body damage. Only 100 miles from house, tire pressure OK and no road hazard problem and would say the problem was the 3 year old Goodyear's.
2014 trip to Alaska on return to US had a right front tire blow out with 20K of damage on 6 year old Michelin's on our Essex. On this tire problem would say that the bad roads in Alaska and the tires being just over 6 years were the problems.
Replace tires at or near to 6 years off age and use the FMCA Michelin tire program would be our suggestions. Have had TPMS for at least the last 12 years.
