OK, this is a real bummer. We have a 2008 Astoria with this problem. I paid a bundle for this motorhome, and in most areas I like it a lot--this is one a the things where my trust in a company was abused.

However, I for one am not going to shift the problem to the next owner. If Thor is wrong to knowingly pass on these inferior products to customers (and they are), what would that make me if I knowingly pass on this product to the next owner?

Shame, shame, shame on Thor/Damon for using such shoddy materials, and shame on Flexsteel for letting them apply such a shoddy product to their frames. If you want to maintain your company's reputation, you don't do this. But I'm going to get the frames properly fixed with a material that should hold up for many years, and then I'm going to feel like I at least did the right thing.

We bought this new in 2009 under full warranty. We now have just under 45,000 miles on the unit. (We live in Georgia, and our kids and grandchild live in California--and for health reasons I cannot fly, so between local trips, business trips, and an annual trek to California, we do get a lot of use from the vehicle.)

Thanks, Ted, but I think I'd already found just about everything on this issue including your revisit.

Bottom line, I suspect that in this economic environment the Thor people can't do what would really be right without risking the company.

And it's hard to know who was actually to blame. In my business, we get vendors who'll show a good looking product and lie about their product quality, or who'll convince us to buy a low-cost good-quality product and then change some important aspect so that the product becomes low-quality, or who'll have one machine start operating improperly or one employee start missing a step in the process so that what was good is now bad. Such suppliers often wind up going out of business, so we have no recourse to them. We also have cases where our purchasing people try to save a few dollars without the knowledge of senior management by purchasing what looks good but isn't.

I'll stick with my solution. This vehicle is worth a lot more than the few hundred dollars I'm going to spend on good seats.

As discussed in a previous posting we have a like problem with our 2008 Tuscany (purchased new in late 2009) and have been waiting on Damon/Thor to stand up to their responsibilities and make it right for all. While our defects are limited to the front captains chairs (the rear recliners and hid-a-bed seem to be holding up well), my patience is about gone and it is now my intent to go viral with the issue via a web page tagged with search key words for Damon, Thor, and Flexsteel. I also intend to publish an article for a Good Sam investigation. Not sure what effect it will have as by their demonstrated actions they may be one of those "buyer beware" outfits and not as reputable a firm as I have given them credit for. Fortunately the Freightliner (chassis) and Cummins (engine) folks are sterling in standing behind their products

Presently Thor is offering one captain seat cover at COST and the second one is FREE. FlexSteel charges a retail customer $250 per seat cover. Not sure what Thor's COST is, but the inquiry is free, nothing to lose, and something is better than nothing. I did not get this when I made my claim recently. I had to settle for less since I had already replaced my covers with one's made by FlexSteel using my fabric that matches my Flair Interiors Sleep couch. When I replaced mine captain's covers, it took 2 hours per unit. Hardest part was getting the FlexSteel badges off of the arms. Really pretty easy. JM2...

I'm going to bite the bullet and pay to have my captains chairs recovered. Where is a good place to buy the actual ultra leather? I have an appointment on Sat for an estimate.

Just a note that I had to re-cover the sofa last year. Exact same problem as the chairs.

Why not have real leather, vinyl or cloth placed on the seat, back and arm rests, and leave the imitation leather on the sides, back, and skirt? might be cheaper.

Ultraleather is a vinyl material but is a higher quality then what Damon/Thor used in 2009. People that have the real utraleather as oem covers don't seem to have any problems with premature wear. That's what I am basing my decision on. It will ultimately come down to cost for material. The Ultraleather is $64.95/linear Yd. Tomorrow I will know how many yards we will need to do both captains chairs.

You are pretty darn close. 4 yds per seat and another 4 yds to do the cushions for the taable. Total around $1200.00 labor and material.

FlexSteel's tag for 558's is 4.2yds, but with allowance for pattern they requested 5yds/unit. Using their fabric, $250/unit; using my fabric, $200/unit. They fit perfectly. This also included cushions for the seat bottoms. Upper foam was re-used. JM2...
