Engine Oil Stick

ANOTHER DUH QUESTION:
Our New Diesel Pusher 2006 Damon. Astoria 300 ISB on Cummins Freightliner Chassis.
Went to check engine oil after our 6k miles trip for one month and a recent oil change prior to the trip.
When I stick the engine oil, after running DP for 5 minutes I find no markings on the oil stick as to full, 1/2, 1/4 etc. Stick is Blank
Do I simply read the stick as it shows oil residue on stick ?
ALSO ....... WHEN CHECKING IS IT "ENGINE RUNNING OR ENGINE OFF" COMPLETELY ?

Diesel engine oil should be checked first thing in the morning before start up; OR after a minimum of one hour after shut down from hot.

There is a possibility that the end of the dipstick has broken off if you can find no indicator marks, you may need a new one.
Where was the oil changed ? If they didn't see a mark they should have reported that on the work order.
