Help! Need a power steering pump!

I'm still on the case for a power steering pump replacement for our 1996 Damon Daybreak. I thought I had one found but it turns out the inlet connection was half the size, so it won't work.

The pump looks like it has a 1" hose inlet from the reservoir under the hood, but all I find are what looks like 1/2" inlet connections. I don't want to starve the pump and cause more issues...not that the hose would fit anyway. I'll look for a picture and attach it.

Update: Looks like it's a Daybreak 2500LE. It has a 7.4L 454 V8 Gas Engine

Another forum suggested that maybe the engine idle is too low causing the weak turning/braking power. However the thing squeals a lot when parking so I'm thinking it's the pump. Anyone know how to check/set the idle speed?

Since no one else has asked is the belt properly adjusted, and the belt not glazed from slippage?

No, no they haven't. Not sure if I checked that or not, it seems fine but I'll try to get my hands on the belt tomorrow and see. It only squeals when turning to park, or pull in the drive way. When it's moving slow.

In case you are not aware, there are a lot more available pumps than there are assemblies with the reservoir attached. The actual power steering pump is available without the can and it's fittings. If you take a look on RockAuto.com for a 1996 Chevrolet P30 with a 454, it will list the various pumps serviced along with 2 assemblies. I would suggest a new pump rather than a rebuilt. It comes with needed seals to swap the reservoir can from old assembly.

You will need a pulley puller / installer for either pump replacement or assembly exchange. Most larger auto parts stores offer loaner tools with refundable deposit. Pickup some power steering fluid there.

For readers searching in the future.. read my old post on chevy p/s pumps.. one may find where there is a remote reservoir.. one Wil have to rebuild the pump.. it's simple.. hardest part is getting pump off engine.. then take to bench and take pump out of case .. the part number is inside on pump.. then you can buy rebuilt guts or d yi the inside.. see my old post on p/s or hydroboost system.. I have part numbers there.. they are easy to find ..
Good luck and keep us posted
