would a ford v-10 with 12000 miles on it benifit from synthetic 10-40 oil and would it extend the oil changes out to 5000 miles.

The answer is yes! I have been using Amsoil synthetic products (oil, gear lube, grease, etc.) for 32 years and have never had a lubrication related failure.

I use the oil as follows:

Initial installation of oil and new filter (I use Amsoil filters since they provide a finer filtering element)

At 5000 miles after the initial fill, I replace the filter and add whatever make-up oil the filter held.

At 10,000 miles I replace the filter as above.

At 15,000 miles I replace the oil and the filter, thus starting the cycle over again.

I use Amsoil's AMO-1 which is a full synthetic 10w-40 oil. I have had the oil tested repeatedly in the past and found that there were no anomalies or indications of "worn out" oil even between the 10,000 and 15,000 mile intervals.

Amsoil synthetic has a slight seal swelling tendency, is high detergent, clings to the metal, and protects to both lower and higher temperatures than high quality standard oil.

My last truck had 265,000 miles on it and did not burn (or drip) one drop of oil.
