I've got a 5.1 system in my ceiling and I too find that they are not up to par, for what I would like to listen too.
My next weekend project is to remove them and see what is up there. I'm going to pull the front three out and the back two and replace with some "home" type speakers, round in-ceiling.
I have my entire home done in OEM Systems, Inc. rectangular and round speakers and I will probably go with them. They are found on the net and also eBay from time to time.
I would find a small pin-style piece of metal, something that would fit in any hole of the grille and simply make that piece you find into some sort of hook with a 90 degree on the end. A coathanger is evidently not what you need due to size, but something under that size that you can bend. With all replacement speakers for residential app's there is a hook device in the package for just this, you may stop by a local dealer and see if they have one...make the job easier.
Anyway, find/make what you can and stick that into a hole in the grille toward the outside edge and simply pull down and the grille will come off exposing the speaker and probably 3-4 screws that are easily removed. You can look on the back and most probably you will see a size, if not then do a quick measurement on the cone of the speaker.
You can either go with automotive or residential here. Residential is more like what you have installed, be a cleaner look and proably be a little more shallow for in-ceiling mounting. Your new speakers, if you go with home style, will have a grille exactly or very close to what you have, so the integrated grille will not be able to be reused, but replaced with the exchange. So don't worry about salvaging for resuage.
Good luck and let me know what you come up with.
