ACE 30.1 Shocks

Suspension question. My 30.1 Thor ACE is an early (Oct 2013) model we purchased used this . Total miles 17K, most by first owner, last 4K on me. Although it rides well, at highway speeds, I can feel all road imperfections in steering wheel, not that big of a deal but the bumps are ridiculously hard. No sense of multiple bounce but the hit resembles a full swing sledge hammer to chassis. Is it time to replace shocks or is this normal for this size Ford chassis vehicle? My travels so far have been in Florida where most roads are not too bad. Last trip, Woke the DW out of a sound sleep, she thought we wrecked.

What is your tire pressure? I keep mine at 85-90 psi.
It came with 100 psi which made the thing ride like a dump truck.

Have it weighed and see how low you can go.

As EricGT says check your tire pressure before you start replacing anything. It sounds like you have too much air in them.

Thanks for the input. Sure enough I'm running at 100 lbs each. Came that way. Less air has to be better. have not tried the weighing yet. Not sure I have a scale near.

FWIW, with a 30.1 that is NOT overloaded you can start with 90 psi if you are still wearing the OE Goodyear tires.
Like I said, when I bought mine CW told me they inflate all tires to 100 psi. That thing rode bad!
I have mine currently at 85 psi. If I carry a full load I increase them to 90 psi. Not so much that I really need to. But I like that extra 5 psi of security.

Just wife and I on long weekends. Not hauling much extra weight or pulling a toad. Single heaviest piece I carry is a portable air compressor fits nicely in exterior bay on camp side. Most thing I fear is tire problems. Still running OE Goodyears with good tread. Thanks again for the advice. Will adjust the psi down until I can dial in with scale.

A simple check that is worth doing is grab a torque wrench and even if you don't have one just a ratchet and check the upper shock bolts to ensure they are tight. I mean TIGHT, if they are you should not be able to move the bolt at all. Mine were snugged and I had a hurendeous slam on bumps, turns out that is what it was. Apparently it is a common problem on Ford chassis. Only the upper bolts were under torqued. FYI.
