ACE Generator saga...

So i was at CW dropping off the rig for a fuel pump fix for the gen that won't start. They did the warranty wrap and that didn't work. The tech and service manager have been chatting with Thor about another ACE where the fuel pump didn't fix the problem. The next thought Thor had was to swap the Batteries and Generator location??? Now if I'm not mistaken, the prior designs of the ACE had the gen right behind the engine, in the first bay. Mine is set back one...the batteries first, then the generator. This latest suggestion by Thor would put the gen right back where it was when this first started?!?!?!?! Is that f'd up or what?

I'm not a service tech, mechanic or engineer...but that to me is just stupid. :bang head:

I mean I get that it is not a Thor problem per se but the Onan gen or the installation and parts seem to be a huge problem on some coaches and not others. That leads me to think it is mechanical and not a 'layout' or location issue.

Needless to say I told them to NOT move anything...they agreed.

I cant imagine what the lay out would have to do with a gen running or not running. In my Newmar DP I had genny night mares one year and it came down to two things. First the mother-board went bad and second two different techs failed to follow the instructions for recalibration after the new board was installed. Initially, they changed everything they could on the genny before getting to the mother board. It was pulled out of the coach three times (thankfully on warranty). I hope I have better luck with my new gas genny on the Thor coach??

We had three things done to get our gen set to work per Thor - 1. heat shield wrap, 2. door installed on gen set. 3. an oil cooler to cool the gas attached to the front of the engine (taken out per NTHSB involvement when we complained to them), the last and final thing NOT per THOR was our service manager having a second "push pump" installed between the generator and the 1st pump, the second is installed shortly before the back tire if looking at ACE from front. That worked! We have used the ACE in hot weather in AZ and CA last summer with no problems.
Recommend you try the pump, even if you pay for it yourself it should not cost that much. This seems to have solved the problem for all who did it.

ACE Generator saga...

Thank you Lisa. Will send to my service guy. The joke is moving the generator! Really?

What is #2 and 3? My rep didn't say Thor mentioned those ideas? Curious.

On number two they installed a small vent on the generator door. Didn't seem to help.
#3, you really need to see the picture to understand. Thor had an oil cooler installed in the front of the radiator, the fuel was supposed to run through it on the way to the generator (doesn't make any sense to go in front of the generator to be cooled down and then back to the generator). There is a discussion and pictures on page 27 & 28 of the original generator problem thread.
Hope this helps.
