Found convection microwave running

I leave our coach plugged into 20amp to keep the fridge running and the switch on store because we have it in storage and not at our home. I went out today to load up for our trip tomorrow and when I walked in the microwave was running. I should have paid more attention as was it on convection or just micro but it freaked me out and I hurry and hit the clear button to turn it off. I don't know if it still had 2 minutes left or two hours left on the timer but when I opened it up the heat hit me in the face and the rotating glass plate was scorching hot. I felt the cabinet around it and it was very warm but not burning hot, yet..

Has this happened to anyone ?? I unplugged it before I left to be sure it didn't happen again. Should I unplug it every time ?? Is it a bad idea to leave it plugged into a 20amp plug ?? Any advice would be helpful as this is our first coach. And rv of any sort for that matter.

thanks !!
Billy

just got off the phone with Thor and they said unplug it while not in use until I can get to my dealer and they will change it out for me. Also while having my HDMI cable run for my hd winegard the people installing it found a screw going into the factory HD cable and went ahead and ran another HDMI for me. While I had Thor on the phone I asked about it and they said to send them the bill and they will take care of it since I paid out of my pocket.

My experience with Thor has been awesome. Glad to be part of the Palazzo fam.

with some of the negative news we sometimes hear thought it would be nice to hear the good too.

Yes, had same issue with a GE Advantium micro/convection/speedcook oven. Went to check coach and when I opened the door, it was hot inside. Found oven running full blast on convection and it had heated up the entire coach to 83F on a 50F day.

Called GE, they sent service tech free of charge. They said oven was beyond reasonable repair (it is 6 years old). So, GE agreed to sell us another Advantium at about a 40% discount off retail and paid to have old oven removed and new one installed.

Never will know why it did this. Now, when we are going to leave the coach for extended periods, I just switch off the breaker to the microwave circuit.

this is happening on more than just the MH line ---
it's the MW and if your outside exhaust vent is cut out slightly wrong,
like on some of the 5er's,
the rv's wall opening won't let the mw's 'flap' open enough to vent and bad things ensue !!!

good that you caught it !

Billy: I have had some issues with my now older Magic Chef unit. I think the bouncing and banging that they take as we drive around eventually plays havoc on the control cards and door circuits. This leads to some unusual issues. But I have had my unit turn on several times as I swap over from gennie to shore power and I did test some minor testing for safety....I placed a cup of water inside and made sure that the unit was not heating....it had in my case only kicked on the inside fan circuit and the lights. Eventually I will change it out for something else. Will it be most reliable????? I can not say.

I have a 2014 34E Hurricane. About 2 weeks ago my Frigidaire Microwave stopped responding to commands on the control pad. I have to unplug the microwave because it comes on by itself. I took it to a dealer and now we're waiting to here back from Thor to see how the repair will get done. On another note there's a 3" crack on the countertop directly behind the oven. Service department says the crack is a result of the heat from the oven. I guess Thor forgot to install a heat shield.

Funny, maybe not so, but our Fridgidare convection micro just took a dive about 2 weeks ago. We are currently in the gulf coast of Alabama waiting for our replacement. Unfortunately ours is about 14 months old so our warranty is over. We did choose to upgrade to what we believe to be a better quality model(Sharp). We'll see as time goes on. BTW this is not the first Fridgidare product we have owned and had problems with.

Wow! Going out to turn off microwave's breaker! Does this happen to a particular make of microwave? We have a Whirlpool & havent had any experience like this.

We have the Whirlpool and have owned our coach for 21 months, living in it almost full time for the past 5 months. Our microwave has never turned on all by it self. If I was really worried about it I would open the cabinet above the microwave and just unplug.

According to my DW our microwave has a cool down cycle that will cause the microwave to run after she has done some baking and the microwave is hot. No way to turn off microwave until it cools down. Maybe the microwaves that are found running have a defective temp sensor and turns on the microwave if it gets too warm, hot day in the coach, etc?

I had a counter top unit at a mountain cabin that turned on twice "by magic", we began unplugging it for safety. At the local coffee klatch a group of locals had said that other people had, had that problem and some electrical genius said that under certain conditions different wave lengths in the electrical line have been shown to trigger certain appliances who rely on IC's to turn on. He said our area, due to it's closeness to a hydroelectric facility we had larger than normal wave fluctuations in our electrical lines. Sounded like a bunch of mumbo jumbo BS to me but he did say a surge protector would stop this problem. I had a spare one and plugged it into the microwave and it never did happen again BUT we also unplugged it when we left.

I don't know if the surge protector really helps but I don't think it would make it worse. Take this advice just like any other that you read on the internet, I'm skeptical of it's efficacy and you probably should be too.

sorry.. should have given an update as to what Sears found was faulty on the micro.

Thor bought these convection microwaves from Sears so the dealer and Thor suggested I contact them directly so they could come out to the coach to fix vs leaving at the dealer to wait. Good thing because it took 2 weeks from the time I called for the first appointment. They came out and found the "3" button sticking and the "cancel" button did not work. Explains why every once in a while the micro would kick on and start cooking for 3 minutes. The tech assured me there is a temp sensor that would have shut it down before it caught fire. I'm not real confident that I would like to test that feature.. But anyway they overnighted me the new key pad and came out a day later and it works great.

I still leave it plugged in all the time because of what was found faulty. If they would have had to change out the whole micro because of a major defect I would be a little less confident and would unplug when not in use.

Forgot to also say it's a Frigidaire convection Microwave
