New Outlaw vs Older Models

Sifting thru a ton in info on the Outlaw. My simple question is this: If I want to haul a 1600 LB Smart Car in the garage, I would need to go back to the 2015-2018 year range because they are rated to haul 2500 Lbs. The new ones are only 1500. Make sense? Thanks, Gary

Yes Gary, I believe you are correct. For some reason that mystifys me, Thor is producing Outlaws that have less garage capability, rather than more.

I have a first gen model with the 24k chassis and occasionally carry my 2nd gen (2017) Smart (2300 lbs). I do have to watch the weight on my rear axle (15.5k capacity).

When looking at Outlaws, make sure you get the 26k chassis, which became standard sometime in the 2010’s. Also, confirm the weight of the Smart, 1600 seems a little light, even for the 1st gen. Also, it is a challenge to tie the Smart down in the garage. Not a lot of room in there to maneuver your limbs while threading the tiedown straps under the low clearance Smart. I keep fantasizing about some custom-made cushions that I can just wedge between the Smart and the garage walls to fix it in place back there.

Agree, 1850 is a better weight for first Gen smart. Would look at some custom wheel chocks for the front as those would be very hard to access. Don't have it all figured out yet. Thanks for the info

Look at a Newmar Canyon Star model 3927, Toy Hauler! It may well fit your needs & the 2021-2022 models are on a 30,000GVWR Freightliner chassis, with a front engine diesel!

2020 and older are on a Ford F-53, 26,000 GVWR chassis, and may work well for you!

Yes, but I believe all Canyon Star toyhaulers have a 1500 lb. garage capacity.

Yes, so they tell me because the freightliner chassis weighs 4000+ pounds more then the Ford chassis, you don't really pick up any extra hauling capacity. Just a nicer fit and finish and a diesel motor as well. Of course, add 75K. But you are getting a Newmar over a Thor.
