Propane gas help

This past weekend was the first time Iíve taken our new unit out where we needed heat. I went out to turn the propane tank on and when I did it sprayed some vapor or something out. So I closed the valve and waited a bit before opening again. Same thing happened briefly. But it did stop. Then I could still smell gas occasionally while outside by the tank. Is this normal? Do I have a leak or an issue? Thanks in advance

Is this on the 2016 MH?

Propane tank Service/Vapor Valve should NOT leak any propane out around valve stem when Opening or Closing the valve.
Valve stem has a packing gland that seals around the stem to prevent leakage
**Service Valve should be FULLY Opened and FULLY Closed
**Packing gland MAY have an adjustment nut (If so do not overtighten or valve will be VERY hard to turn) OR could use O-ring to seal

Propane Bulk Vendor can repair/replace if necessary...but tank would need to be empty

Propane residue from spraying (Ethyl Mercaptan...the stink oil) can linger for quite some time

Yes this is on the 2016 Ace 29.3.

It didn’t leak the whole time. Just initially that I could tell.

Thanks for the reply!

The shutoff valve on the propane tank has packing on the stem that should block propane from leaking past when partially open. The valve is designed to back seat and stop all leakage when opened all of the way snugly, but your packing has probably deteriorated and is letting some propane by while halfway open.

As noted above you can replace the valve but it will require emptying the tank as well as venting any air that gets in when you refill it. Take it to a propane supply shop or a competent RV repair shop to replace the valve. You could do it yourself (except for refilling) by leaving a couple of stove burners on for days to burn up all of the propane. When the burners no longer support a flame then you can replace the valve. Tricky, yes.
