Depends on the type of awning you have. Dometic (A&A) toppers are relatively easy to replace. The spring in the roller can be overcome by opening the slide, then by hand unroll the topper until you can see the slot where the topper is inserted. Slide a small thin screwdriver into the hole on the end of the roller and push it through the roller to lock the spring and roller in place. We did this by using 2 people, my wife was on top of the coach, and I was on a ladder beside the end of the roller. I unrolled the topper by rotating the roller by hand until she could see the holes lined up on the roller end. She inserted a small screwdriver into the hole and through the roller. At this point we removed the screws that hold the awning into the coach track, and basically slid the topper out of the coach rail and the roller slot simultaneously. We purchased the new toppers from a company called Shadepro (
ShadePro Inc.). When we repa ed our toppers, they provided toppers made of marine Sunbrella fabirc and were considerably less expensive than Camping World toppers of lesser quality. They also provide excellent instructions on how to do the job. The Carefree toppers use a different system and require a different way to lock the roller, but I'm not familiar with that procedure.
