MaxxForce 10 350hp vs 400hp Cummins

I just completed a 1200 mile trip (Lake Havasu AZ - Moab UT and back) with lots of mountain grades. My buddy and his new to him 2008 36' Camelot with a 400hp Cummins thought he was going to pass me up on all those grades... well he couldn't. He is very disappointed and thinks his Cummins is defective

I just had to pass that on

Your friend just discovered that in the world of heavy metal and medium duty Diesel engines 50 hp is not a significant number. His coach has a GVWR about 1600 pounds more than you but most of the performance specs are very similar. Your torque ratings are virtually the same with your occurring at a lower rpm. Your differential ratios are the same. With engines and loads so close the biggest difference in climbing will be the driver who keeps his momentum. Diesels don't accelerate, they gather momentum.

By the way, I think the MaxForce engines perform great. Navistar's CEO just about ruined the company with their ill fated emissions plan.

Have to agree with you on that while I only drove the MF10 with 405 hp. When I test drove back to back against a Dutchstar 42' with 425 hp ISL, I definitely thought the MF 10 would hold it's own against the ISL

Driver technique is a big factor also. I get lazy and tend to use the cruise control a lot. That is a recipe for getting passed going up hill by much less powerful units whose driver keeps his momentum going down hill.

Got my eyes on a 2012 Knight

Hi Dennis_k,

Saw your post and others in the forum. Been looking at the 2012 Monaco Knight and like it very much. This will be my first coach and I am a novice in many ways, but this looks like the right coach. Was concerned with some of the things I read on the MF10, regarding emissions but you seem to have had good experience.

Would appreciate any feedback.

I don't know what you want to know but I think it's a great engine. Do all the ECM updates, change the oil and filters as needed and run it hard.

Note, the flack about law suits and failures are related to the larger Maxxforce engines, not the 10.
Depending on the floorplan, options, and exactly when and where yours was built there could be a potential problem with the water heater mounting.

Have to agree with Dennis, these engines are best suited for a MH application, as they do not like a lot of stop and go driving as well as sitting around idling. Don't hesitate to put your foot into it with these engines, they like and respond well to be used.

Thanks to both of you for your quick replays an all the information you share. It has been a great help to me. I'll find out where the MH was built and feed it back later Dennis. Perhaps you could assist me with info if it may have the water heater bracket problem.

As far as the updates, should these be done by the dealer prior to delivery to me. Seems the right way to do it.

Thanks again,

Randy M

Take the Vin no. and phone the 1 877-466-6226 they will put you in touch with Navistar and they will be able to tell you.
If not make it a condition of purchase that the engine updates are all done before you take possession.

If not any Navistar dealer can check for and do the updates.

Good Luck

Randy,

Here is a link to the water heater problem I had: http://www.irv2.com/forums/f115/2012...ue-131077.html

As far as I can tell this problem appeared on 36PFT Oregon units built in late 2011 to early 2012 with a standard water heater.

Send a message via Yahoo to rwdrummer
We own a 2011 Knight and love it. Never owned any other engine except cummins until now.
Got the MF10 and it really is a workhorse so giddyup!
