MaxxForce7 performance

The city of Amarillo has upgraded their bus fleet to Navistar buses with the 220 hp MaxxForce7. I noticed the badging on one of the buses and decided to call the city's maintenance supervisor. Overall they are pleased with the MaxxForce7. Many of the buses have been in service about 2 years and have about 70,000 miles on them. These are on local routes and many of the stops are a block apart. Their bus fleet fuel economy doubled from 4 to 8 mpg. They have had some plugging of the diesel particulate filter and failure of the diesel pump at around 40000 miles. He believes this is due to the stop-idle-go service the buses are in. The pumps have been replaced under warranty. They have not had any cases of oil consumption. He believes in a motorhome service that these plugging and pump failures would not occur. He also mentioned that he thought a motorhome would probably get 10 to 12 mpg which is what we see with a Monaco Vesta pulling a Jeep Wrangler. We have put about 5000 miles on the Vesta with no issues related to the drivetrain.

Makes you wonder if there may not be some preventative measures that could be taken before the pump failure on these buses. I sure hope the supervisor is right about motorhomes with the MF 7.

I had a 2010 Serrano 31V and it got 10.1 average 60-65 MPH in SW Ohio (rolling hills) and 70% interstate driving.
