Radiator Coolant Tank Boiling

My 2012 Monaco Knight with Maxforce 10 engine just started doing something that I cannot figure out.
When running, the coolant reservoir is boiling, with coolant shooting to the top of the bottle. Also, it appears to be derated to the point where it won't even pull up on blocks for an oil change. No codes showing on the diag screen, just changed the large fuel filter, but no improvement. Tried driving down the hill on my driveway and it almost didn't make it back up the hill.

Any ideas? Are these two issues related?

Sounds like a blown head gasket to me or something similar that is allowing cylinder compression to bleed over to the coolant jacket

I been trying to research, but not finding alot of info. Have seen where it could be blown head gasket or EGR cooler? Don't know...
There isn't any water in the oil, no steam from exhaust, no oil in coolant???

If coolant temperature is below the boiling point of the coolant (well over 212 degrees F) then you have to be introducing air/combustion gas from somewhere.

Find it before it puts a big hurt on your wallet.

You are right-- before it puts a bigger dent in your wallet. Dent size being relevant.

I'd lean toward a problem with the ERG cooler which is allowing hot exhaust gas to pressurize the coolant.

As others have said, if the coolant was actually boiling it would be at a significantly higher temperature and should have triggered a warning light. If the coolant cap is bad and failing to pressurize the system, that could allow for boiling at a lower temperature, however.

Still, if you are having an engine derate from the computer, a code would be stored even if the CEL light did not come on. If the lack of power is mechanical and compression is being lost, it may not store a code, but it would have to be a fairly massive leak to drop so much power by itself. Much bigger, IMO, that a leak in the EGR cooler system.

I really cannot think of a fault that would derate and have your boiling symptom but not store a code.

Have the codes checked and report back what you find.

It's hard to find a International service center that will work on RVs, but there is one in San Antonio that does.
Just guessing over the phone that it's the EGR cooler, ball park est is $5k. I'll have to get it towed to their location which is about 120 miles away so they can look at it.

Before considering a 120 mile tow (actually WAY before), price the cooler and a mobile diesel tech.

May be so much less than towing plus, plus, that is worth "throwing the part at it."

Let us know where you are-- someone may know a closer tech.

Do some on-line searching-- should be able to find diagnostics on how to identify an EGR leak-- not familiar with your engine so can't help.

Please, keep us updated, and good luck that it isn't too extreme.

I think I fixed one of the problems. Removed the flooring, changed out the secondary fuel filter, and cleaned the fuel pump screen. It appears that the power is back where it should be, based on driving up the hill in my driveway.
Still looking at trying to get a repairman.

I located a mobile mech to look at my engine. After checking back with his shop, they are telling me that it is normal for a Maxforce engine coolant container to boil with coolant when the engine is running. I have never noticed it doing this before. Does your engine do this?

Can someone provide with some feedback on whether or not your Maxforce engine coolant tank has flow into it like my video attached in previous note?

Thanks, Randy

And, an explanation of HOW and WHY. Inquiring minds want to know.
