2005 Cummins ISL Scan Gauge?

Howdy all,

I have a 2005 Newmar Dutch Star with a Cummins ISL 370. I would like to add one of the popular "OBD monitors" but have found information that leaves me confused. My question is basically, which products will work on my engine?

I believe it is true that this engine does not have the typical automotive ODBII port (rectangular shaped). Instead it has the nine-pin J1939 protocol port. Therefore; a scan gauge/tool such as the UltraGauge will not work. Is this correct?

I believe the ScanGaugeD product will work on my engine. Is that correct?

FY: I'm not looking to solve any problems - I'm just a curious, data oriented type of person. Also, I have sent an email to ScanGauge already.

Yes a Scan Gauge D will work on your Newmar. We have on on our Essex and it has a lot of information on it. Trans. fluid temp, turbo boost, road HP and many other items. For less then 200$ and a hour of work well worth it.

Scan gauge will work although I have no experience with it. I used the VMSpc on my last coach and loved it. I would be using it now but this coach has a built in Aladdin system. On this forum go to top of page and type in either one and hit search. You'll find numerous threads debating the pros and cons of both systems. No you do not have OBD. Good luck.

I have a Scangauge II on my 2003 Allegro Bus and love it. Well worth the investment. Easy to connect and program. Lots of good information about engine, etc.

To be clear - you need the Scan Gauge D, not a Scan Gauge II which is designed for OBD II. I have the Scan Gauge D and it works great!

Thanks guys - understood - the ScanGaugeD is the one.

Also, kudos to the Linear Logic (the company that makes the ScanGauge products). They responded to my inquiry first thing this morning with "As long as your diesel pusher motorhome contains a J1939/J1708 diagnostic port, the ScanGaugeD should be compatible."

Thanks for all the input!

Thanks 2 stroker. I did see that option online but I do appreciate people sharing the options that exist. As a software engineer, I understand how this would offer more functionality and be desirable to some. As a guy who has tried this in other vehicles, it is my OPINION that the driver using a PC for this type of thing (curiously monitoring various items whilst driving down the road) is not a very good option and not what I want. A dedicated display and the ability to easily cycle thru the various params is plenty sufficient for me.

Does the Scan-gauge have more info than the Road Relay on my ISL 400? Or are we even talking about the same data?

JFNM....I understand your concern, but the Silverleaf allows you to display EVERYTHING you want without scrolling through a screen. Give it a good look before deciding.

I just installed a Scan Gage D, it was easy to install and works well. I have a couple of questions about what I am reading. This is on a 2003 ISL 400. What should max turbo boost be, mine reads 22.2 PSI max. Throttle Position reads 97 max, should it be 100%? This is just curiosity as the engine runs good.

You probably have the caps engine, it will boost up to about 25psi under some conditions. If you had the common rail ISL you would see up to 35 psi. I would not worry about 3%. I have never even looked at throttle position.
