400 cummins isl not shutting down

When I turn off the key the motor does not shut down. I have to turn off the chassis main disconnect to shut down the motor. I recently replaced the ignition switch because i was able to remove key with the motor running. I can no longer remove the key with the motor running so that problem was corrected by replacing the ignition switch. Any thoughts on the engine running after the key is turned off?? Where do I go next? Thanks

Welcome to iRV2 .

There are a few possibilities , you are not the first to have this problem.

Two recent examples , one member found a diode in the alternator wiring that should stop the alternator back feeding power to the ignition had failed , another found that internal problems in his dash radio was allowing power from the dash memory circuit to feed the ignition circuit for the whole chassis .

But you may not have to dig into your coach electrical that deep to find the problem.

You need wiring info for your chassis to see if there is an ignition run relay that could be stuck on.

EDIT : So please add chassis make and year to your post and we'll go from there.

Two "small wires" on the alternator are very easy to verify:

Excite= 12 VDC positive only when ignition is ON.

Sense= reads chassis battery voltage all the time.

OK is the coach on a Road Master chassis ?

Have you found the main fuse/relay board to check for an " Ignition Run " relay ?

It is a Roadmaster Chassis and I have not found the main fuse/relay board to check ignition relay. There is a board with several electrical components in the top right of the engine compartment that is accessed from the top through the MB closet. Is that what I am looking for? They are not marked at all to which one is which.

Do you not have an outside compartment in front of the LF tire with a power distribution center that looks like this . ( picture below )

Check the multi-pin connectors on the ECM cables. These connections are known to draw moisture and corrode--causing circuit cross-feed. No personal experience here but am told the corrosion is obvious once you inspect the connections.

I do have the electrical compartment in front of the LF tire. I assume by u asking me that the ignition relay is located there. I will look if there is one marked as such.

Yes , the picture is from another members post about his 07 , I don't have the layout schematic for the fuses/relays.

If it happened right after you replaced the ignition switch, I would look there.

Maybe the wrong switch, or wires not in correct place.

It was happening before I replaced the ignition switch. I replaced the switch because I was able to pull the key out with the ignition on and the motor running. Figuring the switch was just wore out. I can no longer pull the key out in any other position except the ignition off position.

If the condition ; not shutting off with the key ; has been an erratic issue for some time , then , the condition sounds more and more like a sticky ignition relay .

Bear in mind that after you shut down your engine with the master switch the ecm may be repowered when you turn the master back on. If so I would suggest you keep the master off until you locate the issue. Cummins Quickserve should be able to show you the ignition wiring and diagnostic steps.
