When you remove the old filter, shake it up and pour the contents into a glass jar.

Another (more difficult) answer is to cut the old filter open.

No question, single filter systems are a LOT more prone to clogging up that two filter systems.

Got it. Thanks. I have had a few get clogged but I usually get the slight hesitation going up hill as a sign.

Yesterday all was well for 100 yards, then sudden chugging. No warning.

Anyways, changing it this morning. Will see what comes out of the old one.

Thanks

One more thing to consider regarding the filter.

My 2003 built 400 ISL uses only one filter as well, so I suspect it is the same as your filter. To note, the OEM filter, Fleetguard FS1022, is rated at 10 microns. I have found replacements that cross-reference to the OEM to be as fine as 4 microns, such as the NAPA Gold. Yes, the filtering is better, but they will clog easier, especially if you have algae or other debris.

I add this just so you are aware that even though the filter was recently changed, it may have clogged more rapidly, but it did its job. Check the micron rating on your new install, and be aware that a finer filter element will put strain on the negative pull from the fuel pump sooner than the OEM element.

Filter change today. Started it up and it chugged for about 30 seconds and then died.

Hoping a mobile mechanic can get to us today. Of course I leave for a business trip tomorrow for a week and the park we are in is closing on Sunday. Argh!

Here is a link to a thread concerning your exact symptoms.
https://www.irv2.com/forums/f258/cum...ue-486201.html

Though the OP in that thread discovered a leak at the lift pump mount to be the the issue, the diagnostics suggested can certainly help you, especially those that focus on whether or not fuel is entering the filter at all. The owner discovered that after his 30 sec running/dying of the engine, his previously filled filter was half-empty.

Given you found algae, the internals of the lift pump and even the CAPS pump may be clogged.

Thanks for this. Too bad he did not return with the resolution of the issue.

Update: failed ECM and also ICV (fuel pump component). Hoping they can find a tech to do the repair on site here at the RV park this week, otherwise we will need a tow to the Cummins shop.

It is all fun and games until you blow a ECM.

A new transient voltage device is requir
ed with the ecm. About 125$ they often are what causes the ecm to fail. Supposed to throw a code. It can cause your problem. You may want to solder a new one in first and it could be the fix. God willing.

Cool. I will talk to the Cummins and ask them about that.

Jake21 and others,

Here is that Freightliner hidden fuel filter drawing (View B) some owners have been plagued with on earlier chassis models.

Its on the frame rail closer to the fuel tank. As someone else mentioned, this one filter has been responsible for a number of other "suspected" issues resulting in needless tows and repair cost.Click image for larger version
