559 Trouble Code

Has anyone had a problem with their ISL And the code is 559? Has to do with the fuel rail pressure. Symptoms are a check engine light under load and of course it derates !

559 Fuel Pump Delivery Pressure Low

559b Fuel Pump Delivery Pressure Low - Data Valid but Below Normal Operational Range - Moderately Severe Level
559cl Injector Metering Rail 1 Pressure - Data Valid but Below Normal Operational Range - Moderately Severe Level

This is what I have been able to dig up. Sounds like a possible lift pump failure to me.

Thanks mntom: I am at a FL dealer and they did a complete electronic check. Tech says it could be HP fuel pump, sensor, relay or even a bad connection. They wanted to reflash the ECM but network problems interfered with that idea. It will be back in the shop tomorrow. I am hoping for something simple as we are on our way back to Canada.

Why do they want to reflash it? Shouldn't they fix the cause of the DTC first?

A reflash is not the same as clearing the code. I am not a tech but sometimes there are updates. The code could be caused by a glitch in the software. I looked up that 559 and a reflash is one of the possible solutions. I think they start with a pressure test of the pump. It can be a bad connection to the ECM, a bad sensor, bad relay, voltage problem and some other stuff. Part of the procedure is to hook up the ECM to the Cummins computer and check for revisions. The tech is a senior guy and their Cummins specialist. He has a great reputation and I trust his expertise.

I understand about updates. I have a letter telling me to bring my diesel car in to a dealer for updates to the ECM. I would think that there is a mechanical issue be it a malfunctioning sensor to a pump failure to an open circuit on the pressure sensor. After the repair then I would re-flash the computer so that you are not masking the real problem. After all, it ran for the last six years before it set a code.

I had dreaded 559 code in November they had to fly cummins engineer in to fix. 2 months. My post is under cummins forum titled help or sympathy. At the end of the string there is an explanation of what they found. I would send the link but don't know how. Good luck JD

Here you go Mr. Hogbus.

I then reassembled the bed frame and replaced the mattress. we are currently waiting on a new fuel/water separator housing. it is recommended by Mr. Perez that the housing is replaced.

I too experienced a ck engine light. Rail fuel pressure was the code. First replaced the fuel filters...than the "rail pressure relief valve" was replaced. Finally the sensor to the rail pressure relief valve was replaced... Problem fixed!

And now for the rest of the story: I was at the FL dealership. This is a first class operation. They have mechanics that are used to working on RV's. I have never seen a cleaner shop anywhere! The service writer is fantastic. FL dealers have what they call an express assessment. You are charged 2 hours ( @ 140 per hour for RV's) for this assessment. Friday in the pm the mechanic came out of the shop with some bad news. As an authorized Cummins dealer they have to follow procedures dictated by Cummins. Even if the vehicle is out of warranty. First they hooked up to the ecm and insite. The only code was that 559. Multiple incidents. No leaks anywhere. He wanted to first do a reflash. If nothing changed they would go to the next steps. That would include pressure testing, electrical testing of relays and some other things. Their network was up and down and he could not do the reflash. We would have to wait for Monday am. There are spaces for RV's with full hookups . Monday morning it went inside at 7:15. By 9 am he came out with a smile on his face. We were good to go. First I got a lecture on Donaldson filters. He has had bad luck with them. One of the fuel filters was sucking air. A bad or missing gasket! I usually use Fleetguard but this time I used Donaldson. I have always considered Donaldson and FG as two top brands. I will not be using Donaldson ever again. It might have been a one in a million problem but I do not want to have that problem again. I might add that many OTR fleets use neither of those filters. They install Davco( or a similar system) filters. A whole different system. These are an option when you buy a FL truck. BTW: When they reflashed there were 5 updates since my last reflash ( 2010). Now runs like a dream!

Glad to hear you have it fixed up and running good! This is about the first time I have ever heard about a Donaldson filter problem. Is it possible that the gasket or what ever was missing got dropped accidentally during the install?

Tom: I suppose that is possible. But the tech told me he has seen a lot of problems with those filters. I still think they are an excellent product but would always have fears that the problem would reoccur. No more of them for me.

Glad it was a simple issues.

Now you got me thinking. I had the same code and symptoms. I initially replaced my fuel filters but the code came back within 200 miles of driving. Made appointment at Cummins CC shop. However, coach ran fine on the 1 hour drive to their shop. Due to some other work they did, they ran the coach for 2 hours on their dyno and no code, no issues. Final recommendation was to treat fuel for algae and keep additional primary fuel filters on hand.

Next trip got code again with engine derate. So I treated fuel again with Biobor and changed primary filter. However.....when I opened the new Fleetguard filter, there was a second rubber O ring that fits on the center of the filter housing. When I removed the filter on the coach, there was no O ring on the housing. Installed new filter with O ring and coach has run fine since.

So, at this point I don't know if I had algae, if the missing O ring was the issue, or I still have an intermittent fuel pressure problem. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Ain't this fun

Glad to hear the good outcome. And add me the camp that feel Donaldson's are good filters. I usually run Fleetguard, but would not have any concerns with a Donaldson either. Very good chance, a human error was involved in the last install of the suspect filter...

For now, go have some fun, with your newly updated ECM,
Smitty
