Air pumping into coolant bottle. 1997 8.3 Cummins 300hp all mechanical no electronic
Hello everyone,
Real quick question. I on a 1998 American Tradition with a 1997 8.3C all mechanical engine. No electronics. Luckily me. Allison transmission 3360.
My question when at idle I have air pumping into my over flow bottle. Touch the throttle and it stops. I have memory issues. So what is my problem? Yes, it is a 1997 engine.
Thank you for any help.

Has the coolant been recently changed or was very low then refilled? Does this happen when the engine is cold and/or hot?

I do not know that the below would fix your problem.
Try "burping" the coolant system.
On my 1995 there is a valve that can be opened with the engine running to bleed air out of the cooling system. It is in a line behind the top of the coolant reservoir.
This needs to be done whenever changing the coolant or adding a big volume of coolant to replenish the coolant level. This I have learned from experience and from the manual.
I suspect one could accomplish the same feat by running the engine with the radiator cap off for awhile.

No the coolant has not been changed. It does it at first start up and all the way to operating temp of 180 deg. Touch the throttle and it stops

Close inspection of radiator cap may show hard non-sealing gasket or better yet, if it's the original cap, probably be best to replace it. Be sure to get the same pressure rating.

You need to find out if its " AIR " or " Combustion Gas's " in your coolant.
There are test kits avalable.

If it is combustion gas then why does it stop when off of idle? You would think it would get worse.

Its rare, but air compressor can leak air into coolant system at compressor head gasket.
But if so, it ain't no tiny bubbles, it'll blow coolant and lots of it until the air governor pops off
Only real way to tell is to remove coolant lines from compressor and plug off or put together so compressor is out of coolant system loop
Try squeezing a radiator hose and see if it's got lots of pressure be while engine cold....if so it'll be hard to mash together
