Basic Diesel Question
On my old 80's VW Vanagon, the fuel injection system would send pressurized fuel to the fuel rail, some of which was then sprayed into the cylinders. The rail recirculated unused fuel back to the tank.
Does my Cummins 6.7 ISB work the same way? Does it recirculate fuel as well?

Most of the fuel is sent back to the tank. The fuel is what cools the FI cooled down. I have heard at seminars about 80% of the fuel is returned to the tank where the fuel is cooled down my the large amount of fuel in the tank.

I believe that Cummins is the only one that does that in a pickup, one of the reasons they do better in cold weather as it helps warm the fuel.

It also has a side benefit that it warms the diesel in the tank--important in cold climates. Warming is slight due to lack of insulation on the tanks however.

This is true with fuel rail systems...not true with all the older mechanical systems.

I can say it's true with 4BTs and 6BTs using the Bosch VE pumps.
