Cummins ISC8.3 It seems the PO has capped our HPRV and removed the fuel return line.
I have received SPN 157 FMI 0 which says: Injector Metering Rail 1 Pressure - Data Valid But Above Normal Operating Range - Most Severe Level
This has happened driving in the South East this spring. Interestingly, we never experienced it last year driving the rocky mountains. We have experienced low power, hard start, loud engine situation as predicted.
I've ordered a new HPRV and return line and hope to replace and install properly. It does make me wonder about WHY the PO would do this. What was he trying to compensate for? What will happen on our next road trip?

The high pressure manual relief valve failed frequently when owners put aftermarket tuners into the ECM's systems . The fuel pressure would run high enough to force the valve open and a lot of times it wouldn't close , causing the engine to quit.
The valve is the last line of defense for the electronic injectors as extreme pressure from the pump can split the injector(s) housing and fill the crankcase with diesel .

Perhaps , because the code did not appear on your trip through the Rockies the tuner is still in place and has recently failed .
These add on tuners basically intercept sensor signals about fuel pressure and reduce them , so the ECM doesn't use the electronic fuel pressure control ; at the high pressure pump; to reduce fuel pressure .
Once the ECM sees a proper signal and fuel pressure at a dangerous level the code is set and you have your power and starting issues .
Find the ECM and look for anything added either between the harness and the ECM or any non factory wires tapped into the harness near the ECM and remove the added device and/or wiring.

I believe Skip is on to something. The only time I've heard of someone eliminating the HPRV is when adding a aftermarket tuner. Follow his advice and replace the HPRV and the fuel return line back to stock configuration and go from there. I believe 2010 era ISCs were available up to 380hp. Really, you won't likely miss that tuner.

"On the road to find out..."
Thank you both. If it ever stops raining and dries out here in West Michigan, I'll see what I can find. Basically, I cannot see the ECM from above - I just tried.
If I understand you right, I should remove anything I find plugged into the ECM that is not standard. Is there any thing special I need to know?
Attached is a picture I just took from above. The purple arrow points to the Fuel Pressure Sensor. The green arrow points to what???
