Changing Fuel Filter/s
I'm new to Diesel's and have a 2006 Cummins 400ISL. My particular engine has two (2) fuel filters. A primary and a secondary. One of them has the drain plug at the bottom. I've heard about changing fuel filters and also to fill the new filter/s with fuel before installing. Is this correct. I also hear that once changed the fuel system must be primed or the engine won't start.
Just what is the process regarding priming the engine? I see reference to this in the manual/s but it doesn't specify how to go about "Priming."

Look in your engine manual. In my case (ISC) there is a huge warning saying DO NOT PREFILL FILTERS. I suspect yours says the same thing. Cummins engines are primed with an electric fuel pump. You put empty filters on and use the ignition switch to prime them. Turn the key on and wait 15 seconds and turn off. Repeat 6 times. In my case, it only takes 3 times and I'm good to go.

Your Cummins engine probably does not want prefilled fuel filters. Check the manual.
My Cummins engine is older and specifies prefilled fuel filters because there is no electric fuel pump.

Confusion, confusion. I was at my dealers getting some warranty work and asked the prefill question of the mechanic...."prefill them or it'll never start."

My 2000 ISC says do not prefill. I just follow the starting procedure in the book. Never had a problem.

Had my 370 ISL changed last fall on the road. One is filled and the other put in dry. Check with Cummins

After purchasing my 2005 Dynasty with 400 ISL, on returning to MD from FL I noticed some hesitation on hills. It seemed to be getting worse as miles went by. Made it home, though, and removed and cut open the primary fuel filter (closest to the tank). It was full of asphaltenes and other gunk, had not been changed for years. Replaced myself (did not prefill), followed manual's instructions on using the electric fuel pump, VOILA! Problem totally gone. A few miles later, I had the secondary filter (closest to the engine) replaced at the shop that works on my diesels (not a Cummins shop, but works on trucks and engines of all sorts including almost all the fire trucks in the region).
The primary filter/water separator on mine was an FS1022 or FS1003 Fleetguard (10 micron) and the secondary was a FS5488 Fleetguard (2 micron).
When the mechanic changed the secondary FS5488, he did prefill it. That's a risk I would not have taken because of the likelihood of some impurity making its way into the filter on the engine side, and the FS5488 is truly the last line of defense before the injector orifices. However, there were no ill effects so I guess I got lucky.
On my Dynasty the FS 1003 is very easy to access, and the FS5488 is a bit harder and you have to go under the coach to do it, otherwise I would have replaced both myself, it's easy.
If the water in fuel sender on the new primary filter/water separator does not match the old sender, simply unscrew both and screw the old one into the new filter case.
After filling the tank I gave the engine a good dose of BioBor and Startron enzyme, so will check the primary filter sooner than usually recommended.

That "drain plug" is a valve on the bottom of the Fuel Water Separator Filter. With the engine off, open the valve to drain any accumulated water. When fuel comes out, close the valve. Use the engine electric priming pump to refill the filter. Cummins uses suction side filtration on all engines except the ISX which has a pressure side (lift pump) filter. When removing suction side fuel filters you may find the filter to not be full to the top. That is normal for suction side filtration. If it is nearly to the top, the filter is nearly plugged. Pressure side filter are always full, new or plugged.
Refer to your Operation & Maintenance Guide for ISL for service requirements.

That mechanic was thinking more about the older Cummins engines before electric priming pumps became standard. When I used to work in the Caterpillar realm (the Dark Side? ) we had a hand priming pump to fill newly replaced fuel filters. It was unbelievable that Cummins said to prefill and install.

There should be no confusion on late model Cummins engines and by late model I mean from about 1998 forward. Cummins says DO NOT PREFILL FILTERS.

Glad I found this thread. Just had my 400ISL serviced at SpeedCo. They didn't have my secondary (the one with the water seperator they said) in stock so I asked about replacing it myself. The tech told me it would be easy. I asked if I needed to pre fill it and he said they do but it's not necessary because of the electric fuel pump which will prime it with the proceedure outlined here. I'm surprised they don't read the Cummins manuals more!

Just for your information. The filter with the water separator is the PRIMARY fuel filter and it is 10 micron. The secondary fuel filter is 2 micron. As a Cummins Master Certified Technician explained to me - the primary filter removes water, rocks and sand. The secondary filter removes stuff other than water, rocks and sand, so it does the real work.

Thanks Norm. That's what I've been reading and I'm about to break out my manual (last resort I guess ) just to confirm. It really does make my first visit to SpeedCo a bit of a disappointment though. I'm SURE they said it was the secondary filter... and, they didn't have it in stock.
Thanks much to all.
