Check Eng Light-Codes-Fix?

Hope to get some wisdom here!

We have a 2009 Newmar Grand Star front engine diesel, Cummins ISB. Been getting check engine light when using exhaust/engine brake, on long grades..etc. Home now so have the motorhome into TX Custom Coach and they read these codes today:

--Code SPN 641 FMI Eng VGT Actuator failed Occurrences 29 times
--Code SPN 2633 FMI 7 VGT 1 Nozzle position Occurrences 108 times.

One idea is that the variable turbo actuator need to be replaced?
Your thoughts?

In a hurry to get fixed, so any help is much appreciated!

Curt

That's what it looks like. I have a monitor that I can keep an eye on things and it reads all codes and clears them if needed. Great tool to have.

That sounds like a turbo problem. The moveable parts are not moving quite as they should. The normal fix is to replace the turbo, but they can be repaired. This will give you an idea what I mean.

Been there, done that. If your turbo ends up being replaced, brace yourself for some sticker shock. Since your Cummins warranty has expired and if you do not have extended warranty coverage, join the Cummins Power Club for about $20.00 and you will be eligible for a substantial discount on parts and labor if you have a Cummins facility do the work for you.

Thanks for all the comments!
Appy, Do you have any recommendations for a make and model of a monitor I could use on my Cummins?

MnTom, Thanks for the video link, excellent...that gives me a better understanding when I talk to Cummins

FleetMan, Yes we do have extended warranty...hope it covers this! Either way, I am signing up for the Cummins Power Club like you mentioned.

Thanks!

Curt

You could do a Google on Cummins engine monitor and find some that would suit your needs, also would be a good thread in the motor home section and get some feedback from others that may have one so you know what to look for as far as quality.

I installed the Silverleaf VMSpc system which gives me fault codes. I have a Cummins ISC 350 hp 8.3L engine.

I did a service about a month after I bought it, I didn't get any service any engine lights I did have a number of codes from the engine, mostly to do with the fuel injection system. Cleared the codes and nothing has come up since.

I bought my Silverleaf hardware from RV Upgrades cheaper then I could have purchased at Silverleaf. Downloaded the software from Silverleaf and installed on a small Sony Viao laptop. You set up your own parameters you want to monitor using the drop down menu at the top. Easy to do.

Update: Cummins advised that the turbo isn't functioning and needs to be replaced, including the variable geometry component, so you guys that commented were right that it's a turbo problem. On the smaller Cummins engines (like my ISB) they advised they can't clean them, so they just replace them. Good news is that it IS covered by our extended warranty!! Cummins has been great to work with on this..I'm impressed with their efficiency.

Glad you found the problem and it is covered! The smaller turbos like yours can be cleaned, but the labor involved negates the price difference.
