Check Engine, Stop Engine lights on 2009 Vectra
OK some info. While doing some mountain driving west of Flagstaff (on cruise control) my stop engine light alarmed for a couple of seconds and went out. No secondary indications - engine temp, oil pressure, and all others normal. Disengaged cruise right away and light went off. Coolant level is exactly as set at factory. Next day while driving up another mountain area the check engine light came on. (wife was seen hitting the gas at the time) Again, no secondary indications. 3000 miles of driving on this trip - no other issues. Any thoughts? Could it be as simple as just going too fast for the incline?

I don't know what engine you have but I would get to the approriate engine shop and have them check the error codes. My CAT did this and it indicated several error codes from high exhaust temps to high anf low boost pressures. The exhaust temps were corrected by a new inner cooler and the boost pressures by a new modulator valve and freeing up the wastegate on the Turbo Good Luck

Jim,
While returning from Washington State and coming over the mountains Eastbound, I had the Check Engine Light come on. I had a Cummins shop in Missoula, MT put their computer on it an I was told that it was one EGR hic-up. The light went out when I turn the key off and back on again while I was talking with the Cummins national HQ. A couple days later, running over some more mountains, I tried to get into a Cummins dealer to see what the problem was when the light came on again. I could not find one that had any openings, but one knowledgeable dealer said that it was common in the high altitude for the EGR to act up and not to worry about it. We are back in flatland country and the light has never come on again. For what it's worth. The Stop Engine light would be a big worry for me and I'd pull over and call Cummins. (Or CAT if you have a CAT.)

I'm taking it into Cummins this week, if for no other reason than to see the error codes. I would have been a little more concerned about the stop engine light if it hadn't gone off immediately with no other indications. Its a 425 HP Cummins ISL. I was hoping to see if others had encountered this in the mountains also. Thanks for the replies.

Jim,
Please keep us informed as to what the problem (code) was. Thanks.

On my maiden voyage as I headed up the Grapevine near L.A. my STOP ENGINE light came on solid. Stopped and called Coachnet who got hold of Cummins. Sent tow truck. Rig towed 40 miles back to Bakersfield Cummins dealer. Ten hours later we were on our way. Coolant had gotten a bit low and triggered a solid alarm for some reason. Arg...
That was May of 07 and since then VMSPC has been on my wish list but I'm finally installing it now!

Bet it's high EGT temp. Have the Cummins check and make sure you don't have a shutdown code enabled where a limp mode or warning light should be.

Just to put a bit more info into the stream. I have an 07 EPA ISL 425. I had a check engine light come on in the spring of 09 on I-24 just north of Chattanooga climbing a grade. With the light on the engine started to derate. I stopped and decided to treat it like my desktop computer. Shut down and restarted and the light was off and has stayed of since. It seems there are more and more things that need to be rebooted occaisionally.

I had my Stop Engine light come on while driving into Denver from the NE on I-76. I pulled over and stopped and waited for the engine to cool. I then started with no warning message and drove on to Golden, Co to Dakota Ridge RV Park with the message coming on 2 more times with the engine seeming to heat up and cool down when the fan would come on. We stayed for one week and then went to Rocky Mountain Cummins in Henderson, Co., about 20 miles with no warning message. We need an actuator for the turbo. We are now waiting for parts. Glad we are still under Cummins warranty and that the problem happened where it did.
