Checking Fluids Cummins Diesel and Onan Gen.
I am new to the motor home world and tring to learn. I have a 2014 Newmar Dutch Star with a Cummins 450 diesel and an Onan Genrator. What is the best time to check the oil/transmissionfluids? Cold engine or Warm Engine? How often should you change the fluids in the generator?
Thank you

Hi Jim, Your engine oil, cold, before starting, and anytime during the day after running is ok to. Your generator is the same as your engine oil. As far as your transmission, check your Allison manual, I believe it wants it to be up to operating temp. and use the dip stick or the preferred method is using the transmission shift pad, it will tell you how to do this in your manual. Your manual's that come with your new Coach will answer all of your questions, it would be good for you to grab a favorite beverage and sit down and read them, and get to know your new Rig.
• Coach on level ground
• Transmission in neutral
• Transmission at operating temperature
• Press up and down arrow keys simultaneously
• Wait for 2 minute “count-down” 8 to 1
• Display indicates - OL
– “OL - OK” indicates good oil level
– “OL - HI” followed by number indicates quarts over-filled
– “OL - LO” followed by number indicates quarts under-filled.

Just have to add; after running the engine ; a minimum 1hour shut down is recommended for an accurate level reading. Overnight preferred.

Your best bet is to READ your owner's manuals. They will tell you exactly what is required by the mfg so that your warranty will stay in effect. You should not deviate from the manual in any way.....at least until your warranty is over with.

Would be checking EVERY AM before startup on both the generator and the ISL450, in a short while you will develop a feel of how they are doing.
My ISM50, I check when I get hone after a3week run of 4900 miles, found ZERO indications of oil usage on either the Cummins or the Kubota.
But you need to get familiar with its NORMAL.

Good advice to read your manuals thoroughly. My Cummins ISC service interval is 15k miles or 12 mo, whichever comes first. For my Onan 7.5 HDK AJ 11451H diesel generator, the basic service interval (oil & filter & clean spark arrestor) is 150hr or 12 mo, whichever comes first.
