My 1998 Cummins has a hickup issue that I have had checked out at east 6 times with no results.
So far I have replaced the lift pump
Added a Lift Pump Pressure Guage
Had the Trans Computer changed as there was a seprate issue (No Shift) error code now fixed.
Anyway drive one day no issue drive second day minor glitches. Drive third day major jerking? Why? Please any help? JR

I have a 98 and mine is the first electronic version. Is yours electronic?
If so what codes are being thrown. Don't really understand the problem your having.
What pressure are reading for your lift pump when you have the problem?
When you changed your fuel filters did you remember the smaller o ring?

The Cummins Shop says there are no codes showing up but the engine is Jerking very bad.
Day one of driving it starts out slow and gets worse as the miles go on.
Yes the small o-ring is in place on both filters.
The pressure guage is at about 19 PSI on the lift pump.
Again the Cummins shop I have at home is clueless as to what is the cause. Now I am so far from home and concerned.
One note I have a VMSpc hooked up as well. JR

I agree look at stored codes. Do any dash lights come on? You are looking at fuel issues already so I will ask if you have checked the air filter. Is there a vacuum indicated on the filter minder? Water in fuel or bad fuel are candidates.

I am not sure how to check the stored codes? As I indicated I had the Cummins shop check the codes before I left and they indicated I had none.
Air filter is new just changed it before this trip.
I have gone through two tanks of fuel this trip alone.
New fuel filters before this trip as well. Yes all O-rings changed.
This forum suggests possible injector pump issue? Another comment is my system electronic or not. I am really not sure about that question. Anyway wish I could figure this out as the jerking can not be good for the engine. As I said drove 12 hrs the first day with out an issue. Then on day two it starts and day three is hell.
I have had the guys at the Cummins shop working on it for months. JR

You really have a good lift pump. A new OEM pump is about 16. Just make sure it stays above 5 while running or the VP44 injection pump will damage itself.
This model is self priming but not self bleeding. Cummins has a procedure for getting the air out after filter change. Turn key to on...lift pump runs a few seconds. Now bump the starter without starting engine.....pump runs about 25 to 30 seconds. Turn key off. Repeat about 5 times without starting engine. This will push trapped air through and out of the system. You will see smoke when starting after procedure,,,normal.
If air is in the VP44 while running it could hurt the injectors. It runs at about 15000 psi.
If you have a VMSpc go to diagnostics and "view history" after each trip. Or you can display the window while driving and watch for codes in the window.
If cummins can't find anything wrong then maybe the tranny is not shifting into lower gears properly. If you started out in high gear the engine would buck.
Mine has the Allison MD3060 and it has a lot of diagnostic features. You might want if run it. It also shows malfunction codes.
Try some Power Service in you tank. You can get it at Walmart.

Graystroke
Can there be air in the injector pump after 1000 miles have gone by? When I change filters I prefill them before I install to get most of the air out ahead of time.
There are no error codes coming up on the VMSpc, and the Cummins guys said they did not find any codes as well.
Seems funny the first day of travel has no issues but by day three the jerking can be as much as 20 times a min.
Anyway I wish I knew what the issue is JR

I don't know. You would think the air would be out by 1000 miles. Who knows.

Perhaps I should run the fuel tank down as far as I can? Typically I fill up at 3/4 tank or just under.
I do not see any water in the fuel filter and I change filters every year.
It does it when the engine is under load, yet on day one it does not do it at all?
I am heading home on Friday I hope I make it! JR

One of Greystroke's suggestions might help and that is the possibility of your transmission not shifting properly. When the engine bucks look at the tach to see if you might be in the wrong gear. I don't believe that air in the fuel is the problem. Cummins says that there is no need to pre-fill the fuel filter and in fact advise against it. Any air has been quickly passed through the fuel system in my case with at 2000 ISB.

checkd computer and it had a 3500 code also. Ended up being a battery cable connection.

Hey Thanks FW a wiring issue seems more feasible to me given that it does not show up until well into the trip. I also noted that as the hiccup gets worse also it seems to take longer to start? The last time I had that issue it was a loose connection in the battery compartment. Perhaps as I bounce down the road these connections are working themselves loose? Anyway that is my next investigation, between keeping the family at the beach. I will let you all know what I find and if anyone else has any ideas please keep letting me know. JR
