The ISL is based on one the most reliable engines made, the ISC 8.3. HP ratings vary from 350 to 450 depending on application. The 340HP you mention is likely an ISB. The ISB is a light duty diesel with parent bore, designed to last in the 300k miles range. It has a torque rating in the 600ft/lb range. The ISL is a heavy duty motor designed to last 500k miles. It has sleeved cylinders to allow a rebuild without removing the block from its mount. Its torque is ~ 1200ft/lb. This engine couple with the allison transmission will power and tow a combined weight near 55,000 lbs. It will also have an integral "Jake" brake for using the engine as a compression brake as the trucks have. As long as it has been maintained properly it will outlast the MH chassis.

The range in the listed HP is provided by the ability to adjust the engine to different applications, mostly by changing the amount of fuel delivery. Most of the larger engines & manufacturers have similar designs.

I own a 8.3ISC 350HP, when I purchased the motorhome the first thing I did was take it to the Cummins dealer. I asked his opinion of turning the HP down thinking it would save me some fuel, he said I'd come to appreciate the 350HP & I have.

The great thing about a diesel is that you can up the power and not hurt the fuel mileage. I have my little 5.9 that was 180 hp 420tq stock putting 365hp and 833tq to the ground and still have seen as high as 23.7 mpg on straight diesel.

Contact Cummins Corporate at 800-343-7357 and give them your engine serial number for the exact numbers you are requesting.

The numbers I got from a very nice lady at Cummins are: 450 hp @2100, 1250 torque @ 1400 and sweet spot between 1600 - 1650

What's a "411"??

Maybe if you gave us the make, model, and year of your coach we could give you a more specific answer. The 8.9 has been around a long time and has been modified over the years to provide a whole range of horse power ratings.

411 = Information... Depending upon age:

1) Crank the handle, get on the party line, and ask if anyone knows...

2) Get on the line, and ask the Operator

3) Take the handle out of cradle, and use the Dialer to enter 411

4) Take the handle out of the cradle, and punch the buttons 4-1-1

5) Pull you cell phone out, hit Google (or Iphone SIRI) microphone, and ask your question

Or, if anyone is really stuck, for a small fee you can ask my BIL's teenage son - as we all know teenagers know everything!

Best to all,
Smitty
