Cummins Code Reader

I have an intermittent "stop engine" light that came on a few miles from home the other day. After pulling over and checking everything I made it home at slow speed. The light seemed to come on when I would get over 30-35 mph or the rpms would get high during acceleration. I was babying it so it was hard to tell which was the cause (speed/rpm) during the couple miles home.

Question: contacted local Cummins shop about having someone come out and read the codes for me so I could determine how to proceed. They were not much help frankly. Said I should tow my 40 foot bus in to have the codes read.

Any ideas on how to go about getting the codes read?

Thanks.

I am thinking it is going to take someone with a laptop w/Cummins Insite program(software) to plug into the ECM 9 pin connector to retrieve them and see what is going on. Did you ask them about a service call, need codes read. Tell them you are willing to pay a service call$$$$$ and if it is something you can't handle, you will have it towed to them then. Good luck!

I went to a truck parts store and purchased a HD diesel code reader for about 500$. What I also found is that the codes from your chassis builder Spartan or some else might be different then Cummins codes. Might check with chassis builder for their codes. Might have someone around your area who might have code reader. I keep ours in the coach and we are in Quartzsite for the next couple weeks. Have you checked for fuel? What is happening when you try to start the coach?

Codes

Order a ScanGuage D from Camping World for $150 or so. It will read your codes. It also does a lot of other stuff.

Good Luck.

Silverleaf may be another option for you. The program VMSpc is free to download. The connection cable is #300 - $400.......maybe cheaper now. It will provide lots of info on your laptop.

Just ordered a Scangauge D after reading some reviews from other RV owners. Seems like a sensible first option to try. Will try to update my post with the results of the scan after I get it installed.

Thank you everyone.

Received my Scanguage. Plugged it in to the dash connector and it connected right up. However, it found no codes. There are no lights on either (they always went out as soon as I slowed down anyway) but I thought any code would have been stored.

There is also a connector in the rear at the engine. Should I be plugging into that one?

By the way, I did contact Cummins dealer and they wanted me to have it towed in and were not real keen on the idea of having someone come out. Didn't leave me with a very good impression of Cummins service that's for sure.

Sounds like it may just be a faulty warning light or sender unit. If its an intermittent warning light and Temp/Oil pressure gauges are all reading good I would feel ok about driving it in to a shop.

Max I agree... but I experienced a "derate" condition along with the light. I just can't imagine there wouldn't be a code stored for a derate scenario...

Make sure it's not low on coolant. That can cause an intermittent stop light and derate. If the Scanguage didn't read any codes, they aren't hard codes (they've corrected themselves). Maybe if you take it out and drive it again the codes will reappear and store in memory.

From your post, it sounds like the coach is still running. Why not drive it to a Cummins shop and let them read the code. It's typically $100.00 to hook up and read.

Same thing happened to us.
Consistent with going up overpasses, or grades and went away when load was reduced on engine.
Changed the 2 fuel filters (along side the road) and problem gone.

It may be the simple fix that is worth a try if you haven't yet.
You will never know when you get bad fuel until it's too late.
Carry spare filters and method to change them.
