Cummins ISC broken lifters.

I recently had 3 lifters excessively wear on my 2000 8.3 ISC Monaco. The end result wasn't good. The cam looked OK (three lobes not great), but the wear was mainly on the lifters.

What was the cause of this failure? I only have just over 100K mi. Other threads reveal that this is not an isolated incident. I think there is an issue with Cummins making the ISC a 24 valve head. 99' was still the 12 valve motor. In 04', I believe the went to a roller cam and lifter system. Were the early 24 valve motors, a design flaw? Seems to me that the flat tappet cam and lifters, can't handle the increased spring pressure.

Worked at Dodge on Cummins 5.9B engines when the 24 valve engines were introduced , till I retired in 07. Don't recall any with that fault showing up in the shop.

My experience finds cam / lifter issues due to lube, extended or non oil changes, improper lube oils, lack of correct adjustment.

wHAT GRADE OF ENGINE OIL DO YOU USE

/BRAND?

cj-4 oil has greatly reduced levels of ZDDP,the antiwear additive fdue to oil consumptiocausingcatalyst fouling.

I've always used Delo 15w-40. I changed the oil annually, or 5-8,000 mi. I bought this coach 10 years ago with 54,000 mi. I put another 53,000 on it, in that time. I never adjusted the valves. When this happened, The #3 exhaust is the one that broke. #5 exhaust was .035 out of spec., and all the rest were within spec.

That is to bad it happened but there is a lot of talk(on a hotrod forum) about cams & lifters getting wiped out by this new low zinc oil.I have been putting 2-bottles of Lucas break-in lube (it has ZDDP) in it every oil change & one bottle when I change the oil in my 1998 Dodge w/a Cummins.

0.035 out of speck in what direction? was it to tight or to loose. I would guess that the excessive wear came from the adjustment being to tight.

That one was loose. Missing material from the lifter, the cam lobe was decent, but not good. #3 came apart up top, that was the beginning of the end. I towed it home, the first thing I did was remove the valve cover. I saw the damage, the checked the rest of the valves for lash. #5 exhaust was .035 too loose. Quickly following #3 exhaust.
