cummins isl 400hp smokes on start up?

hi all i have a isl 8.9 2002 capps fuel system that i had the injection pump replaced last year .well got unit out of storage and have noticed when engine smokes like mad on cold start up then about 30seconds later tone of engine changes (sounds much better ) and smokes stops with no other smoke at all even under full load ? i thought it might be injection pump needs to be bled for air or something i have gone on a 300 mile trip and no still the same on cold start up.. any help would be great jim

I will follow this also as my cummins starts in less than a couple of spins and no
smoke but the cat is another matter. Takes several seconds then starts and lots of
black smoke for 15 to 20 seconds then ok.

Have the fuel filters been serviced recently? Is this the fuel from last year? I'm thinking an injector is sticking. Folk s a lot smarter than I will be checking in, too. A sticky injector should set a code. I would try something like Stanadyne Blue Performance to see if that would help.

(Sorry, Saturday wise guy remark ahead: Most people smoke after, not at start! --- OK, out of my system now....)

Any fault codes? If not, then I like the advise of running some cleaner thru - sure could not hurt! I'll follow the thread too...

Please let us know if you find 'the answer'.

Best of luck,
Smitty

Have driven diesels since 1980... never had or saw one that DID NOT smoke on startup !

That said... if the smoke is EXTREME then this forum is the place to get info or at least links to those with real help, ie... the manufacturer, Cummins !

Is this a change from before the injector pump swapout ?
Have you ever taken it outta storage before and observed the reaction to "stale fuel"...???

Almost sounds to me like there is not a real problem here at all... again, unless the smoking is excessive.

I am no expert by any means. I have an older 8.3L Cummins.

When I start my rig after sitting overnight and the temp is around 20 degrees or below, I will get clouds of white smoke if I have not observed the "wait to start" light or used the block heater.

All other times, no observable smoke from the driver seat.

What color is the smoke? White, Blue/White, or Black? Does it have a sweet smell? (seriously - burning coolant smells sweet)

Take an oil sample and see what the percentage of fuel is in the oil. Someone else put their sample up and was worried about silicon (dust) but never mentioned 2% fuel in it.

You can run the engine with Cummings Insite and check the injectors. One might be sticking. Can't do that with Silverleaf.

wow thanks all for all the input
I tried something differnt yesterday i cycled the lift pump with the air bleed on the injection pump open, it was about 3 minutes before i got fuel comming out .I closed and cycled the lift pump 2 more full cycles then fired the beast up and none to very very little smoke . it did run soft sounding for about 45 seconds the she hopped right up with nice loud diesel knocking.. will try again tomorrow ,will post what happens?
I am thinking from system being opened for the new injection pump and all filters replaced it needed a good bleed?
If it happens again I am thinking air is getting sucked into the fuel system? will have to check further into it.
leaving tuesday for a 2 week trip dont want any issues
thanks again for all the input jim
