I'm sure Mr D will chime in soon. He has a bad experience with his 650.

Our ISX dropped a valve in #6 at about 14,000 miles then again at 45,000. First one was covered under warranty to the original owner. Last one was out of warranty and the bill was over $33,000, although Cummins picked up $10,400 of it.
Also on it's third turbo.
Cummins knows the ISX's have poor reliability but is not stepping up to the plate like they should. I was at the Cummins dealer in Portland OR earlier this month and even the parts guys knew of the troubles. One told me that the engine was designed for 400-450 HP but was pushed beyond that.
That dealer knows of 4 ISX's that have dropped a valve in #6, two MH's and two OTR trucks.
There are several other threads her in the Cummins forum with the same problem and doing a search on the internet will find more.
Supposedly Cummins has a fix, new head, valves and turbo, but I'm not convinced yet!

Mines rated at 525 and I have no intention of uprating it even though it's only a software change. I too fear the ISX and am hoping that because it was built in 05 with just an egr valve (no def etc) that it will be reliable. I know of 2 650s and a possible 600 (never confirmed) and now yours. Good luck, I hope it goes well.

I don't think it's just a software change. The injectors are controlled by a cam on the '07 EPA models and not electronically like the newer ones might be.
I asked about turning ours down to a 600 but they said it was too expensive as they also need to change the torque converter.
I also know of one ISX 600 that blew up right after the owners spent $20,000 getting it running, got 20 miles from the shop and threw a rod through the crankcase, for another $44,000 in repairs, Cummins refused any coverage. The owners suspicion is that when they rebuilt the blown turbo metal got into the return line and jammed the oil pump as metal was found in the pump.

Just curious Mr_D ....With 2 dropped valves and 3 turbos, are you planning on selling your coach or maybe getting an extended warranty for future repairs? Not sure if a repair warranty company would take you on now that there has been multiple repairs but I was just curious what your plan of action (if any) is....

We bought the rig 2,600 miles before the last dropped valve so no way are we selling it even though the DW has liver cancer!
As to a service policy (by law they're not "warranties"), can't afford one now!

Sorry to hear about your wife's cancer...makes my problem seem trivial....have you heard if anyone put in a recon motor instead of repairing the old engine, since their isn't much of a warranty on the repair...90 days

Did you get an estimate yet?
Standard warranty from Cummins on a rebuild is 100,000 miles or one year. Where are you getting the warranty info?
By the time you pay for a recon and installation it's going to be far more I think. The one I mentioned earlier got a reman block and it was still $44,000.
Have you done a search on the forum here or googled them? There were also some failures of the ISX in Foretravels that were posted on their site. It's not hard to find more ISX failures by digging some.

We don't think the DW will get a liver transplant in time. They can keep treating the tumors as they show up for a while, but not forever. The Dr. says it's like playing "whack a mole". In the meantime I'm just doing what I can to help her. We also have a 15 yr old grandson living with us that needs us.

There are several threads in this same section including Mr D's. In several of the failures Cummins has paid around 50% of the total costs...Good Luck, and please post up how yours goes.

The new ISX's are a different design than the '07 EPA version and use the DEF injection.
Just doing a search here and using Google will find quite a few. If you're in the trucking business you should be aware of the reports by perusing the trucker boards, that's where I found some.

Nussbaum [ March 04, 2014 @ 04:13AM ]

I have a 2009 Kenworth with a cummins and have had nothing but problems. At 65,000 miles the turbo went and DPF filter. at 75,000 miles the air compressor went due to carbon build up. At 170,000 the EGR Cooler went taking out the turbo and the DPF filter. A week later it was back in for ALL the injectors. In the last 45-days the truck cost me $ 17,000. This truck is down for repairs 75% more than its twin that is 2007 vintage.

Debbie [ September 06, 2014 @ 12:35PM ]

We bought our truck new 2009 Volvo with 485 Cummins ISX. We have had nothing but issues with our regen system since we got the truck. At just 7,000 miles we need a new particular filter. Then again at about 100,000 miles. At just over 330,000 miles the EGR Valve, EGR Cooler, Filter and Turbo we relplace. Six months later Turbo was replace again. With less than 100,000 miles we needed new compressor. We are on our 3rd one of those. The ERG Cooler failded within 130,000 miles. We have replace the 7th injector so many times I have lost track. We are on our 4th particulater filter. Just 2 months ago we had the filter cleaned. We have had and are still having problems with the system an NO ONE csn fix it or tell us ehat to do. All the techs just stab in the dark In 2013 we spent over $13,000 on the regen system. Our recurring problem since the last EGR Cooler failed is the truck will regen every 75 to 225 miles. If we are lucky we will go 300 miles without regening. But thst is so rare! I have talked to Cummins they said to stay away from Bio Diesel! We do our best but dometimes we have no choise. The above article even says ULSD is the only option. But yet the government is forcing Bio Diesel. hat do we do & WHO CAN FIX OUR TRUVK?

Thanks to everyone for responding to my post asking about experience with a dropped valve in a Cummins ISX 650 engine. The coach is a 2009 45' Monaco Signature with only 23,000 miles and since it is 6 years old it is out of warranty. THe engine is out of the coach but as of this morning they have not completed the removal of the head so total damage is unknown. The work is underway at Cummins Pacific in Redding California and the service manager has contacted Cummins but they say they are unable to cover any of the repair since it is out of warranty. Any suggestions?

Something similar to this happen to my ISX 37 days out of warranty I had an exhaust valve break. It took out the turbo, the head and the EGR and everything else down stream. My coach had 34,000 miles on it. At first Cummins started up on my maintence schedule, of course that got them no where cause they do the maintence and oil changes every 7500 miles (which is half of what Cummins calls for. Cummins told me how sorry they were and how they had never seen anything like that before, they admitted that it wasn't my fault, that it was just a bad valve, (the head of the valve actually split in half). After a few days of talking back and forth Cummins agreed to cover a big part of the parts and labor, and to extend a 100% warranty on the engine for one year.

It took the Cummins guys about three days to pull down the engine and fix everything and put it all back together. It's now been 19 months and the engine has run strong since.

Friday Nov 21, 2014 - Traveling north bound on I-5 just an hour from Eugene, the engine lost power and running very rough. Shut down and hauled the unit into Cummins Coach Care in Eugene. Today I was told the isx650 dropped a valve! Wow! 49,164 miles, 2009 model. Really curious if Cummins will come good for any part of the repair. No extended warranty.

Current and future Cummins owners who read this thread and feel Cummins needs to step up their game should go here:

You are being redirected...

Fill out the form and explain your displeasure. Customer opinion can carry a lot of weight and curb the stingy bean counters in the warranty department. Somebody always seems to come up with an idea like cutting 25% out of legitimate claims, or try the deny until they fight mentality. Poor product support deserves the wrath of customer revolt. Yes, mine has already been sent.

You may be the next one with a warranty claim who expects product support.

Having so much fun with my isx650. Nov 2014 49,164 miles, dropped valve which Cummins Coach Care overhauled and did a fine job. Today the EGR failed. Total miles 59,803.
