Cut Fuel Filter and It's Full of Black Gunk

I cut my primary fuel filter open and it was black like oil, is this normal and how does clear fuel turn black?

Most secondary filters block 10 microns or more, some filter down to 2 microns.

You have a microbial infestation, its caused by water in the fuel. Some people call it algae, it's not as that is a vegetation and it needs sunlight to grow. Treat the fuel with a shock treatment of an anti-microbial additive like BioborJF to kill the microbes, then use something like Startron Tank cleaner to get rid of the black gunk.

And have couple spare filters on hand to change out

You mean black as in like this? Got a load of bad fuel from a cheap station and a change of filters cleared up the problem.

Many a year ago when I was hauling fuel to gas stations truck stops I would haul a Mix of Diesel #2 mixed with well dillulant. Well dillulant was used to pump into the product well to help dilute the crude oil and make it easier to pump out of the ground and into above ground tanks. It was all legal by the state of CA and when I would look at the product flowing through the sight glass it was as black as the sample dons2346 is showing. I would tell all my friends which truck stops to stay away from.
