DEF Problems & Who to Direct Your Frustrations To

In today's "RV Travel" online edition, there is an article about DEF systems, their failures and the frustrations of owners. The writer of this article is just as frustrated, and has listed the names and email addresses of Cummins and EPA folks that need to hear our voices. If you have, are, or will experience a DEF issue, these are the folks to register your complaint with. Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease! Contact every one of them today. They will get the message. Since the head of the EPA is by political appointment, don't forget your senators and congressmen.

These problems need to be remedied ASAP.

I don't think that Cummins supplies the DEF systems. You might be better off talking to the chassis manufacturer.
Good Luck,

Link to above mentioned RV Travel article...and Cummins execs emails

https://www.rvtravel.com/stuck-def-s...l-cummins-epa/

Those Cummins execs mentioned may not make the DEF systems but they can facilitate the fix with the EPA much quicker than we could. If they get enough emails:

"Enough is enough

Enough is enough. It seems we erred when we tried to “play ball” with Cummins and pull their executive contact information. We’re now restoring it. It’s time to email Cummins and the EPA. Here’s that list of Cummins executives, and a little background information on them.

Chief Executive Officer: Tom Linebarger. According to Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings, this well-fed executive cashes in a $17,291,581check annually. That’s what? Over $47,000 every day, 7 days a week. Send him your fan mail at.

tom.linebarger@cummins.com

Vice Chairman: Tony Satterhwaite. Satterhwaite takes home $4,607,396 annually (2020 figures). His email is:

tony.satterthwaite@cummins.com .

Cummins’ Chief Financial Officer is Mark Smith. Mark’s annual paycheck (in 2020) was $4,000,096. Email him at

mark.smith@cummins.com .

Finally, there’s President and Chief Operating Officer, Jennifer Rumsey. She’s new to the company, so we don’t have an SEC filing to learn about how much she’s taking home. You can email her at Jennifer.rumsey@cummins.com" quote from RV TRAVEL article.

My 600ISX does not have DEF but I sympathies with those that do.

I think DEF problems were created by the EPA, not the manufacturers, and you should direct your frustrations there. The EPA has set impossible to meet emissions standards. The manufacturers are trying in good faith to comply but that requires installing systems that are too sensitive for practical application.

I agree. It is the politicians who promise everything but deliver nothing and still get re-elected year after year.
And the unelected government bureaucrats (EPA in this case) that are not accountable to us that are coming up with all these insane rules and regulations.
Barking at these business executives and their wages is totally misguided.

And it's going to get much much worse. The latest executive order directs that the EPA and the DOT work with CARB (California Air Resources Board) to solve the country's emissions problems. So, even if you're living in Iowa where there is no pollution you are going to have to follow the same excessively stringent emissions requirements that people of Los Angeles do.

The EPA is a regulatory agency that is tasked BY LEGISLATION to meet pollution benchmarks of various kinds. Their actions are described and authorized by statute law. Passed by elected officials and signed by an elected official...

DEF sensor problems in diesel RVs seem to have spiked in the last year or so. Perhaps because more coaches have it, perhaps because specific builds of sensors, or their encapsulation have unexpected deterioration...

Two years ago this was a low-traffic topic on iRV2. That makes me ask "what changed" and "why now?" The answers are probably in the sensor changes when DEF 'quality' became a reported metric - whether the sensor, its packaging, or the little analog/digital converter chip or the connection to the CAN bus.
