Derated ISC

I’ve been reading the threads about getting more power from the ISC. From what I’ve read, it’s recommended to get an EGT probe, and then a tune (like the AG diesel). And also maybe bump up the boost to lower the EGTs. The issue is, most of the threads are talking about the ISC 350. I have an ISC 315.

How I understand it is, I can do all the same mods to my ISC 315 as an ISC 350, but I’ll always be 35 HP or so behind. So how do I get up to the 350 for a better starting point?
I’ve read that only Cummins can remove the derate (there has to be a better way to say that). I stopped by my local Cummins shop to get some parts today, and asked one of the guys about it. He said they can hookup to the computer and upgrade to the next level, but that level might only be 330. And that would be 350$. Doesn’t seem worth it to me to pay that money unless they can bump it up to 350 HP

It just makes me wonder, can only Cummins un-derate an engine?

Also I would assume that all the ISC offered in the same model year share the same parts. Like the model year 2000 ISC 315, 330, and 350 should all share the same parts, with the 315 and 330 be derated. So it seems that the tune is all the is different.

Good questions. I don’t have any answers but will be watching.

Was always told by Cummins that the 315 cannot be programmed higher. I installed a engine fan from Source Engineering that supposedly gives me back 35+-HP. I also put on a Aero muffler and I know these improvement's make a big difference on my rig. She runs great. Sure I'd love to have a 500 or 600HP engine, but I have no issues at all. Another guy who I think has an aprox 2000 Windsor or Diplomat and the 315 ISC put that AG upgrade on and was extremely happy with it's performance. And yet another with a 2000 Dip or Windsor and 315 has an electric fan which must help performance, but not sure of the effect when his PacBrake is on relative to the fan and air dynamics? I'll keep watching this thread too.

I was looking into getting an aero muffler for mine too. Looks like the stock muffler is just clamped on. It might come off without any cutting

I would just think the 315, 330, and 350 are all the same engines internally (and same turbo etc) with a different tune. I could understand if it was one of the lower HP ISC, like an ISC 240 or something. Those are most likely different.

Having some experience getting sport cars retuned with an aftermarket program, I just wonder why no one has come up with an aftermarket solution for retuning a Cummins like the dealership can. I know the AG Diesel setup just intercepts the signal and modifies it, versus actually flashing the ECU.

I gotta admit, I love the sound of the Aero. Plus the factory muffler is a huge glob of ridiculous metal.

I just wonder if I can change the muffler without my wife noticing

This is the kind of muffler I have on my coach. It sounds really good, and came with a equally good price. No restriction with a 5" exhaust.

I installed the Walker resonator. It’s a little quieter than straight piping but still straight through flow. Also cheaper than the Aero.

I then installed a Donaldson muffler. It has the same attenuation as the stock muffler, but flows three times more. Basically no restriction.

The reason for the change in mufflers was noise. Neighbors could hear me coming from a 1/2 mile away. All the mufflers I’ve used have only given me a slight increase in power and fuel economy. EGT’s and turbo spooling have stayed the same. I found the Fass fuel pump conversion and increasing turbo boost have given me the biggest bang for the buck.

What did you do to increase turbo boost.

Mike, Is that your air filter canister above your exhaust?

Don't forget the new chrome tip.

That's a little over the top for me. I was a wrench for 15 years in my first life so I am not afraid to turn wrenches, it's just some of this stuff doesn't interest me:-) Those guys like Vanwill etc are really deep into some stuff (in a really great way). They have replaced steering boxes chasing a perfect steer and have done all sorts of panrod, stabilizer bar stuff etc. It's really great stuff, just not for me at this point in my life, plus my rig runs like a scalded ape and I am really happy. I am 60 and only been into RVing for 7 years and I am so pissed I wasn't into it 20 years ago:-( I have done a ton of stuff to my rig and am still looking for small stuff to do. Working on my AirDog pump installation and also my button to raise my rear of the coach 4 inches when descending my driveway. Nothing too serious. Air valves, airlines and wiring. If you are really looking to get more out of your 315, check into Source Engineering and the fan they sell. Interesting information with dyno stats to back it up. Also look deeper into that AG Diesel module. A guy with a way heavier rig than mine but who has the 315 is tickled pink with his results. Thanks for sharing that link.

Ballpark cost for the fan (without install?)
