Dip stick level good but oil light on dash is on

I have checked the oil dip stick and it shows full but, the oil light is randomly coming on. I show pressure on the dash gauge. Does the light respond to oil level, or pressure? If it measures and outputs pressure reading to the gauge (and it does) could there be a second sensor? Or perhaps this one sensor does two things? I.E. on/off and differential pressure?
Afraid to drive with this light on!
thanks for any help

Have a shop check your oil pressure. What is wrong is usually a bad oil pressure sender. Not a big deal.

There are 2 sensors, Cummins uses one for ECM information, if it goes engine should shut down. (Some chassis suppliers use this for gauge as well.)
Then....some chassis builders add a "warning" sensor for dash light,

Not knowing which engine you have I can't tell where it's located.

If the dash gauge shows pressure, and engine ain't shutting down, it'd be ok to drive it to shop....

Be best to hook it to a diagnostic code reader and view both sensor values to know which one to replace.

It is a 400 ISL. It seems the warning light goes out when engine starts and reciprocaly, the boost relay engages. There are two sensors. One sends out the pressure and the other is just a switch. The switch is the failed unit. Is there a cheaper automotive switch that I can replace it with?

Nope. Get the correct sensor. You may can get the part number using your engine serial number on Cummins quickserve and search the internet, Amazon for it.
