This functions as an expansion joint in the exhaust system. Any leakage would be cause for replacement.

I had same part break of. Cummins refers to it as the air transfer tube, 3964647. Shop around they are between 300 - 400 dollars. Ask me how I know. Make sure you check you get cooler while this out. I just happen to notice some coolant in mine. No indication of white smoke or lose of coolant. Must have just started. ERG cooler is not cheap either, between 500 to 850 dollars depending where you get it, and wether you buy new or reman. I went with the new OEM just because of the back and forth issues some have with aftermarket. I spoke with a gentleman who remans these, and the 5.9 coolers are the only ones the don't replace with stainless tubes. The reason he gave was too many returns because the hot exhaust gas pass thru too fast without cooling enough and customers were getting high temp warnings, some going into limp mode. For what these are I think they are a little pricey. I'm still not convinced you can't just weld a 3.5 inch tube in the place of the bellow. I heated mine up, very little expansion and my torch put more heat to it than the exhaust temp can. Only reason I didn't do it, you have to stand on your head to replace it. Only doing it once.
