On my pickup 5.9, it was on the injector pump side of the engine near the engine's rear, just above the oil pan flange. My problem was not the actual pump, but rather the 2 flexible lines from it to the steel fuel lines. They looked fine on the outside, the inside was collapsed.

Last year I experienced the same failure. It was caused by a failed "transfer pump" as Cummins calls it. It actually pulls fuel from the main tank. It feeds the high pressure injection pump. Its located on the rh rear section of the ISB engine block. I had a mobile mechanic change it in Spokane WA. He got to it from the bottom of the engine. If I remember correctly the bill was less than $700.

I forgot to say; this pump has a fuel screen inside that can become clogged with debris.

Ray, thanks for commenting on the screen inside the lift pump! WOW, had never heard of that. Is this something that can be accessed, and cleaned? I know I ran some really knarly algae-cruder fuel a while back. Changed both my spin on filters, but an worried about stuff that may have gotten deeper into things.

Any idea where a guy could get more details?

Thanks.

I was wrong, I apologize, you have an in-tank lift pump; no screen to clean.
